Exploring the Relationship Between Parental Concern and the Management of Childhood Obesity
Development of Condom-Use Self-Efficacy Over 36 Months Among Early Adolescents
This research evaluates condom-use self-efficacy and its increase throughout adolescence. Documentation of the development of condom-use self-efficacy would be important for prevention efforts given the influence of self-efficacy on actual condom-usage. This study assesses a hypothesized mediation mechanism of the development of self-efficacy using a mediation analysis approach. The participants, 497 grade-6 Bahamian students, were randomly assig…
Latent Class Analysis of Risk Behaviors Among Bahamian Young Adolescents
To explore an association between values and risk behaviors among early adolescents, baseline data from 689 Bahamian youth (median age = 10) were collected from the Portrait Values Questionnaire (Schwartz et al., 2001) and The Bahamian Youth Health Risk Behavioral Inventory. Latent class analysis identified three classes of youth in differing patterns of risk behavior: (7.8%) high levels of drug and delinquency risk behaviors; (2.8%) high levels …
Preventive Care in Appalachia
Context: West Virginians are at increased risk for heart disease. Given that the process of atherosclerosis begins in childhood, the Coronary Artery Risk Detection in Appalachian Communities Project was developed to reduce this risk by implementing a cholesterol screening program in the schools. However, participation rates have been less than desired. Purpose: This study examined the barriers to participation in preventive health screenings, spe…
Youth and Parental Perceptions of Parental Monitoring and Parent-Adolescent Communication, Youth Depression, and Youth Risk Behaviors
Data from 752 Bahamian youth and their parents were analyzed to examine the relationship of youth depression with youth risk involvement, parental monitoring, and parent-youth communication. Depressed youth were older, more likely to engage in risk behaviors, and they perceived significantly lower levels of parental monitoring and higher levels of impaired communication than did nondepressed youth. Both depressed and nondepressed youth perceived …
HIV/STD Risk Behaviors and Perceptions Among Rural-To-Urban Migrants in China
Data from 2,153 sexually active rural-to-urban migrants in China were analyzed to examine the relationship between the movement of rural-to-urban migration and increased HIV/STD (sexually transmitted disease) risk and the applicability of constructs of a Western-based theory of behavioral change to the study population. Measurements included migrant mobility, sexual risk, and the seven constructs of the protection motivation theory (PMT). Data in…
Parent and Adolescent Perceptions of Parental Monitoring and Adolescent Risk Involvement
Objective. To compare parent and youth reports of the extent to which parents monitor their adolescents and to determine whether parents' perceptions of parental monitoring are more predictive of adolescent risk behavior. Design. Data were obtained from a cross-sectional sample of 270 parent - adolescent dyads recruited from rural communities in West Virginia. Parents completed a series of written questionnaires, and adolescents (12-16 years) pro…
Risk and Protective Factors Associated with Gang Involvement among Urban African American Adolescents
Data from 349 urban African American youth were analyzed to explore whether the differences in exposure to violence, resilience, and distress symptoms between gang members and nonmembers resulted from the risk behaviors in which youth participated or from the gang membership itself. Youth with current or past gang membership documented higher levels of risk involvement, lower levels of resilience, higher exposure to violence, and higher distress …
