The Culture of Translational Science Research
We apply a symbolic interactionist framework and a qualitative methodology to the examination of the everyday reality of translational science research (TSR). This is a growing scientific movement that aims to facilitate the efficient application of basic research to clinical service design and delivery. We describe the emerging culture of translational research at a mid-size medical center that received a Clinical and Translational Science Award…
Lower Stroke Mortality Among Hispanics
OBJECTIVES: Stroke mortality rates are reported to be lower for Hispanics than non-Hispanic Whites. We investigate the degree to which this lower reported mortality is explained by inaccuracies introduced through omission of nativity, imprecise measurement of cause of death, and under-ascertainment of Hispanic ethnicity on death certificates. We used national vital registration data for the years 1989-1991 and 1999-2002, including foreign- and US…

Ethnic Differences in In-Hospital Place of Death Among Older Adults in California
BACKGROUND: : Substantial ethnic differences have been reported in the probability that death will occur in a hospital setting rather than at home, in a hospice, or in a nursing home. To date, no study has investigated the role of both individual characteristics and contextual characteristics, including local health care environments, to explain ethnic differentials in end-of-life care. OBJECTIVES: : The study purpose is to examine ethnic differe…
Decreasing Variation in the Use of Hospice Among Older Adults With Breast, Colorectal, Lung, and Prostate Cancer
BACKGROUND: Utilization of hospice services has been shown to vary by place of residence and patient characteristics. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine whether such variation has changed over time. Hospice utilization is examined as a function of sociodemographic characteristics, geographic location, type of insurance, and year of death. RESEARCH DESIGN: This study used a retrospective cohort design. SUBJECTS: We used data from…
Utility of the Seer-Medicare Data to Identify Chemotherapy Use
Background. Medicare claims include codes for chemotherapy administration and specific drugs given, and researchers are increasingly using these data to measure the use of chemotherapy. However, the validity and completeness of these data as a source of information has not been established. Objectives. This analysis is intended to assess the utility of the Medicare claims to capture chemotherapy use. Methods. Persons with breast, colorectal, and …
Studying Radiation Therapy Using Seer-Medicare-Linked Data
BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have used the SEER or Medicare data to assess the use of radiation therapy. However, the completeness of these data has not been evaluated. METHODS: Using linked SEER-Medicare data, a cohort was created that included incident cases of breast, endometrial, lung, prostate, or rectal cancer from 1991 to 1996 in persons 65 years and older. For each of these cases, use of radiation therapy as an initial course of treatment…
Use of Seer-Medicare Data for Measuring Cancer Surgery
BACKGROUND: The accuracy and completeness of the SEER-Medicare data for measuring cancer-related therapy have not been extensively evaluated. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the best method for measuring cancer-related surgery among patients in the SEER-Medicare database. SUBJECTS: A total of 149,970 incident cases of breast, colorectal, endometrial, lung, pancreatic, and prostate cancer diagnosed between 1991 and 1993.MEASURES The most invasive surgi…
Measuring Breast, Colorectal, and Prostate Cancer Screening With Medicare Claims Data
BACKGROUND: Evaluating the use and effectiveness of cancer screening is an important component of cancer control programs. Medicare claims may be a useful source of data when screening older populations, but they are limited in terms of completeness and the ability to distinguish screening tests from those provided for diagnosis or surveillance. RESEARCH DESIGN: A review of the major screening modalities for breast, colorectal, and prostate cance…
Accuracy and Completeness of Medicare Claims Data for Surgical Treatment of Breast Cancer
BACKGROUND: Although a number of studies have used Medicare claims data to study trends and variations in breast cancer treatment, the accuracy and completeness of information on surgical treatment for breast cancer in the Medicare data have not been validated. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the accuracy and completeness of Medicare claims data for breast cancer surgery to determine whether Medicare claims can serve as a source of data to augmen…
Diagnosis-Related Group Refinement with Diagnosis- and Procedure-Specific Comorbidities and Complications
Diagnosis-related groups have been revised through more refined uses of secondary diagnoses. Under the refined diagnosis-related groups, patients are distinguished with respect to classes of secondary diagnoses that are disease- and procedure-specific. Each class represents a different level of utilization for a given principal diagnosis or surgical procedure. The refined system was evaluated with national data from the Medicare program. Estimate…

Changes in Age and Sex Specific Tonsillectomy Rates
National estimates of tonsillectomy rates were generated from the Hospital Discharge Survey for the years 1970 and 1977. A comparison of the rates over the seven-year period revealed significant declines in T&A for all age and sex categories and in tonsillectomy alone for males aged 20 through 29. It was also observed that sex differences found in 1970 persisted in 1977. (Am J Public Health 1982; 72:488-491.)

The relationship between legal abortion and marriage
A study using the abortion-birth ratios for residents of each U.S. state for the second half of 1970 and for all of 1971 was done to determine if legal abortions reduced marriages. Data showed that trends were consistent with the hypothesis that a relationship exists between l egalized abortion-birth ratios and trends in crude marriage rates among states between 1967 and 1971 with reduction in crude marriage rates in the states with the relativel…
