  • Lithological and geochemical characterization of ‘adinole’ artefacts from cave deposits in southwest Wales

    Open Access•R E Bevins, Elizabeth A Walker et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Environments and Humans•2025

Twenty-three artefacts previously identified as being manufactured from adinole, a fine-grained metasomatic rock, from late Middle to Upper Palaeolithic cave sites in southwest Wales have been re-examined in terms of their petrology and geochemistry. Standard petrography has been combined with automated SEM-EDS analysis for a single artefact to determine the mineralogy and textures of that artefact, while portable XRF and μXRF have been combined …

  • Early Literacy Predictors and Second-Grade Outcomes in Children Who Are Hard of Hearing

Open Access•J Bruce Tomblin, Jake Oleson et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2020

This study contrasted the early literacy outcomes of children who are hard of hearing (CHH) with children with normal hearing (CNH). At age 5, prereading skills of oral language, phonological processing, and print knowledge were examined in CHH (N = 180) and CNH (N = 80). The CHH had poorer oral language and phonological processing abilities than the CNH but comparable knowledge of print. At age 8, measures of word reading, and reading comprehens…

J Bruce Tomblin, Melody Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•Ear and Hearing•2015

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the language outcomes of children with mild to severe hearing loss during the preschool years. The longitudinal design was leveraged to test whether language growth trajectories were associated with degree of hearing loss and whether aided hearing influenced language growth in a systematic manner. The study also explored the influence of the timing of hearing aid fitting and extent of use on children's language gro…

  • Gender, age and self‐employment

Open Access•Elizabeth Walker, Elizabeth A Walker et al.•ARTICLE•Women in Management Review•2007

Purpose This paper aims to investigate age and gender differences in initial motivations for starting a business. What is not known, however, is whether the initial motivations for starting the business are different for older people and whether any gender differences exist. Historically, women were “pushed” rather than “pulled” into business ownership, but more recent studies have indicated that, overall, many women now actively choose self‐empl…

  • Medical and psychiatric symptoms in women with childhood sexual abuse

Elizabeth A Walker, Wayne Katon et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1992

Although there is increasing awareness of the short-term psychological and social adaptations to childhood sexual abuse, little is known about the long-term effects of such abuse, particularly its effect on subsequent medical utilization and the experience and reporting of physical symptoms. We re-analyzed data from a previous study of 100 women scheduled for diagnostic laparoscopy (50 for chronic pain, 50 for tubal ligation or infertility evalua…
