  • Smoking Prevalence and Secondhand Smoke Exposure during Pregnancy and Postpartum—Establishing Risks to Health and Human Rights before Developing a Tailored Programme for Smoking Cessation

Open Access•KATE FRAZER, Patricia Fitzpatrick et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Both smoking during pregnancy and secondhand smoke exposure are associated with reduced health outcomes. However, limited consistent evidence exists of risks of secondhand smoke exposure in pregnancy. Currently, inadequate smoking cessation services exist in Irish maternity hospitals. To identify the number of pregnant women smoking during pregnancy and to identify their exposure to secondhand smoke, we conducted a cross-sectional observational p…

  • School sociodemographic characteristics and obesity in schoolchildren: Does the obesity definition matter

    Open Access•Silvia Bel-Serrat, Mirjam M Heinen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

School socioeconomic status was a strong determinant of overweight and obesity in Irish schoolchildren, and these associations were age- and sex-dependent. School location was not associated with overweight or obesity. There remains a need to intervene with school-aged children in disadvantaged schools, specifically among those approaching adolescence, to prevent a trajectory of obesity into adult life

  • Happy birthday? An observational study

Gabrielle E Kelly, Cecily Kelleher et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2018•References: 9

BACKGROUND: Previous studies show contradictory findings on the relationship between birthday and deathday, in particular whether people postpone death until after their birthday. We examine the phenomenon in eight groups of famous people. METHODS: Birthday and deathday for the following groups were recorded: British prime ministers, US presidents, Academy Award best actor, best female actor, best director, Nobel Prize winners, Wimbledon men's an…

  • Effects of dietary restraint and weight gain attitudes on gestational weight gain

Open Access•Emily Heery, Patrick Wall et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 46

  • Prediction of gestational weight gain – a biopsychosocial model

Open Access•Emily Heery, Cecily Kelleher et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2015

Objective To examine the influence of health behaviours and psychological well-being on gestational weight gain using a biopsychosocial model. Design A prospective cohort study of pregnant women consecutively recruited at their first antenatal care visit. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data on health behaviours and psychological well-being in early pregnancy. Linear regression and logistic regression were used to identify p…

  • Hard-to-Survey Populations

    Open Access•Bradford Edwards, Tom W Smith et al.•BOOK•Hard-To-Survey Populations•2014

Surveys are used extensively in psychology, sociology and business, as well as many other areas, but they are becoming increasingly difficult to conduct. Some segments of the population are hard to sample, some are hard to find, others are hard to persuade to participate in surveys, and still others are hard to interview. This book offers the first systematic look at the populations and settings that make surveys hard to conduct and at the method…

  • Age-period-cohort analysis for trends in body mass index in Ireland

Open Access•Tao Jiang, Mark S Gilthorpe et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

We notice a generally positive age and period effect but a slightly negative cohort effect. Knowing this, we have a better understanding of the different risk groups which allows for effective public intervention measures to be designed and targeted for these specific population subgroups

  • Familial intergenerational and maternal aggregation patterns in nutrient intakes in the Lifeways Cross-Generation Cohort Study

Open Access•Aakash Shrivastava, Celine Murrin et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2013

Objective The current study prospectively examines the intra-uterine hypothesis by comparing maternal, paternal and grandparental lineage influences on children's diet and also maternal–child aggregation patterns during pregnancy and early childhood. Design Prenatal dietary information was available for expectant mothers, fathers and up to four grandparents through a detailed validated semi-quantitative FFQ. At 6-year follow-up, when children ave…

  • Body mass index and height over three generations: Evidence from the Lifeways cross-generational cohort study

    Open Access•Celine M Murrin, Gabrielle E Kelly et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

This is the first family cohort study to report an enduring association between mother and offspring BMI over three generations. The evidence of BMI transmission over three generations through the maternal line in an observational study corroborates the findings of animal studies. A more detailed analysis of geno and phenotypic data over three generations is warranted to understand the nature of this maternal-offspring relationship

  • P2-50 GGT levels are a coherent indicator of cardiovascular risk in primary care in both men and women: Results from the stop HF study

Carmel Conlon, Cecily C Kelleher et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Introduction Gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) has been re-established as a marker of cardiovascular risk rather than simply an indicator of liver disease. However, there is little data on the associations between GGT and groups with conventional cardiovascular risk factors in the primary care setting. We sought to examine the factors associated with elevated GGT in an Irish primary care population. Methods We explored the baseline data set of the …

  • The "Americanisation" of migrants: Evidence for the contribution of ethnicity, social deprivation, lifestyle and life-course processes to the mid-20th century Coronary Heart Disease epidemic in the US

    Open Access•Cecily C Kelleher, John Lynch et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2006•Cited by: 4•References: 42

  • Influence of sociodemographic and neighbourhood factors on self rated health and quality of life in rural communities: Findings from the Agriproject in the Republic of Ireland

Joseph B Tay, Joseph Tay Wee Teck et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2004•Cited by: 4•References: 34

Objective: To examine the influence of sociodemographic and neighbourhood factors on self rated health, quality of life, and perceived opportunities for change (as one measure of empowerment) in rural Irish communities. Design: Pooled data from cross sectional surveys two years apart. Setting: Respondents in four randomly selected rural district electoral divisions with a population size of between 750 and 2000. Participants: 1738 rural dwellers …
