  • Gramsci as Theorist of Politics

    Open Access•Jacinda Swanson•ARTICLE•Rethinking Marxism•2009•References: 4

This paper briefly discusses some of Antonio Gramsci's contributions to the theorization of politics that Peter Ives elucidates in Gramsci's Politics of Language. I also highlight a few of the many illuminating aspects of Ives's in-depth but accessible exploration of Gramsci's approach to language and politics, such as Gramsci's distinction between regressive and progressive forms of hegemony and his antiessentialist and antipositivist theorizati…

  • Economic Common Sense and the Depoliticization of the Economic

    Open Access•Jacinda Swanson•ARTICLE•Political Research Quarterly•2008•Cited by: 7•References: 30

This article theorizes and begins to explore the extent to which academic and nonacademic discourses contribute to the reproduction and legitimacy of the economic status quo. The author argues that economic practices in the United States are often depoliticized in at least two different ways: They are naturalized or essentialized conceptually, and political control over them is limited. Drawing on antiessentialist Marxian economic theory, Gramsci…

Yet, even these scholars sometimes employ modes of economic thought that underestimate the diversity and complexity of the ways in which political and economic relations affect each other, includi…

  • Recognition and Redistribution

    Open Access•Jacinda Swanson•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2005•Cited by: 26•References: 15

Nancy Fraser has elaborated a framework for analyzing different forms of oppression using the categories of redistribution and recognition. This framework has come under criticism from Iris Marion Young and Judith Butler, despite the fact that all three theorists similarly insist that justice is not reducible solely to economic justice and that struggles against 'cultural' forms of oppression are equally important. Drawing on the debate between t…
