  • Nietzsche and Suffered Social Histories

    Open Access•Jeffrey M Jackson•BOOK•Nietzsche and Suffered Social…•2017•Cited by: 1

This book presents a reading of Nietzsche as a thinker of the suffered social histories of subjectivity. It suggests that Nietzsche's concept of genealogy needs the concept of convalescence to be coherent. Genealogy is a form of reflection that traces the suffered scenes of which that reflection is symptomatic, whereas convalescence is the ordeal of reflection's coming to bear its limits within scenes of embodied suffering. This theme is develope…

  • Persecution and social histories

    Open Access•Jeffrey M Jackson•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2010•Cited by: 1

The respective philosophies of Emmanuel Levinas and Theodor Adorno share a concern with articulating a critique of Husserlian phenomenology which would do justice to the materiality of the subject. With this commonality in mind, it is argued that Levinas reifies this materiality by endowing it with a metaphysical priority expressive of ethical universality. In contrast, Adorno eschews the philosophical obsession with the assertion of metaphysical…

  • Questioning and the materiality of crisis

    Open Access•Jeffrey M Jackson•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2007•Cited by: 2

The theme of the possibility or impossibility of the compatibility between Heideggerian philosophy and Freudian metapsychology has been taken up in various ways. Without going into the details of this body of commentary, it is argued that there is a clear difference between the ways in which Heidegger and Freud think cultural crisis. By examining texts of both thinkers from the early 1930s, it is shown that whereas Freud conceives of the possibil…

  • Social Impact Theory

    Constantine Sedikides, Jeffrey M Jackson•ARTICLE•Basic and Applied Social Psychology•1990•Cited by: 7•References: 3

In light of the recent controversy regarding Social impact Theory (Jackson, 1986; Mullen, 1985, 1986), a test of certain crucial features of the theory was undertaken. High-strength and high-immediacy sources were found to exert more impact than low-strength and low-immediacy sources respectively, thus supporting Social impact Theory. Additional tenets of the theory concerning number of targets were also supported. However, more complex predictio…

  • Subject Pool Sign-Up Procedures

    Open Access•Jeffrey M Jackson, Mary E Procidano et al.•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1989

The extent to which introductory psychology students' self-selection into experiments produced biased samples was assessed in two experiments. As part of the normal sign-up procedure, students chose between apparently different experiments with quite different descriptions and between individual and group sign-up slots. Upon arriving at the laboratory, all students filled out personality questionnaires. Results demonstrated that students sorted t…

    Open Access•Jeffrey M Jackson, Vernon R Padgett•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•1982•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The study of social loafing was extended to artistic creativity using the catalogue of 162 Lennon-McCartney songs. Although all songs were jointly credited, most were actually individually authored. Jointly authored songs with low author identifiability were predicted to reflect less effort than individually authored songs with high identifiability. Analysis showed support for the predictions; jointly authored songs were found to be lower in qual…
