Affect and Attention After Deleuze and Whitehead: Ecological Attunement
Russell Duvernoy's new book Affect and Attention After Deleuze and Whitehead: Ecological Attunement can be seen as a further contribution to the growing body of work that articulates some of the central ideas and authors in continental philosophy with key concepts and thinkers from the process tradition. Published in the New Perspectives in Ontology series with Edinburgh University Press, what is distinctive about Duvernoy's book is that it attem…
Traces of Social Binding: Interpretive Tracing as a Bridging Concept
This chapter continues the recent debate on the epistemological dimension of traces and tracing. Following our own preliminary work and in confrontation with an explicitly non-Western epistemology—namely, the case of “First Australians”—the chapter proposes the perspective of interpretive tracing. It calls for the systematic reflection of practices and underlying epistemologies of traces as objects of interpretation in a cross-cultural, i.e., cos…
Racial/ethnic disparities in disability outcomes among post-acute home care patients
Racial/ethnic disparities exist in ADL disability improvement among HC patients. Research is needed to clarify mechanisms underlying these disparities. Disablement Model factors may be targets for clinical intervention
Relationships between children’s behaviour and parents’ work within families of mining and energy workers
We examine the relationships between the working arrangements of mineworkers and behavioural issues in their children, using a large Australian matched-pair dataset of workers and their partners. The findings suggest both that workers’ work conditions, and aspects of safety and security influence aspects of child behaviour, reflecting not least the results of tiredness, emotional exhaustion and sleep interruption. In addition, it appears that chi…
The Broken Compass: Parental Involvement with Children's Education
It seems like common sense that children do better when parents are actively involved in their schooling. But how well does the evidence stack up? Broken Compass puts this question to the test in the most thorough scientific investigation to date of how parents across socioeconomic and ethnic groups contribute to the academic performance of K-12 children. The study's surprising discovery is that no clear connection exists between parental involve…
Behavioral Engagement in Learning and Math Achievement over Kindergarten: A Contextual Analysis
Using nationally representative data on 12,462 kindergarten children, this report examines the link between behavioral engagement and math achievement growth during kindergarten. Multilevel models show that students with higher individual engagement tend to experience larger math achievement growth over kindergarten, that classroom engagement makes a difference in how much achievement growth students experience over kindergarten, and that student…
Racial and Social Class Differences in How Parents Respond to Inadequate Achievement: Consequences for Children's Future Achievement
OBJECTIVE: Despite numerous studies on parental involvement in children's academic schooling, there is a dearth of knowledge on how parents respond specifically to inadequate academic performance. This study examines whether 1) racial differences exist in parenting philosophy for addressing inadequate achievement, 2) social class has implications for parenting philosophy, and 3) parents' philosophies are consequential for children's academic achi…
Forum Introduction: Deleuze, Whitehead and Process
Back to Life: Deleuze, Whitehead and Process
In this paper I argue that Deleuze's ‘thinking with’ Whitehead gives access to a range of novel conceptual resources that offer a route out of phenomenology and back to life, a movement beyond intentionality and back to things ‘in their free and wild state’. I lay out four conceptual and methodological markers (there are many more) – creativity, event, prehension, empiricism – that characterise Deleuze's metaphysics and provide a guide for showin…
Black-White Inequality in Reading and Math across K-12 Schooling: A Synthetic Cohort Perspective
While much has been written on the racial gap in achievement, few national studies have assessed the gap's trajectory over K-12 schooling. The reason for this is understandable—most national data sets do not contain respondent information for this entire educational period. I utilize survey data from three national data sets containing White and Black students to document the trajectory of reading and math inequality between school entry and the …
Schooling Behaviors or Prior Skills? A Cautionary Tale of Omitted Variable Bias Within Oppositional Culture Theory
Prior research on oppositional culture theory has generally focused on beliefs about the opportunity structure, or the “acting white” hypothesis, as an explanation for racial differences in school achievement. However, little attention has been given to the mechanism by which these beliefs affect achievement: schooling behaviors. The authors posit that students' prior level of skills may be an important omitted factor that biases the effect of sc…

The Passion and the Pleasure Foucault's Art of Not Being Oneself
This article interprets Foucault's life-long involvement with transgressive experiences as an art of not being oneself, an effort to escape identity and become other. By bringing together Foucault's own theoretical practices with those drawn from Deleuze and Blanchot, and linking these with biographical material (modes of existence), I show how Foucault's 'encounters' with passion and pleasure in film, philosophy, S/M, drugs, the Greeks and suici…
