Documenting the undocumented
This article explores the challenges of developing queer migrant justice strategies within nation-state contexts. With a focus on the Toronto-based ‘Let Alvaro Stay’ campaign (2011) and Julio Salgado’s collaborative ‘I Am Undocuqueer’ project, I critically examine queer anti-deportation activists’ reliance on methodological nationalisms and visibility politics in making claims hearable to the state. While such tactics risk reinforcing the nation-…
Ambivalent Homonationalisms
Prompted by a concern with the territorial and affective governance of transnational queer migration, and with a focus on state regulations of ‘same-sex’ family class migration in Canada, this essay explores the psychic and geopolitical economies of locating ‘home’ vis-à-vis (homo)nationalized belongings. We are all in this together, and we will all get through this together. Dr. Margaret Chan, director-general of World Health Organization, June 11, 2009 Immunity and invulnerability are intersecting concepts, a matter of consequence in a nuclear culture unable to accommodate experience of death and finitude within available liberal discourse on collective and personal individual. Life is a window of vulnerability. It seems a mistake to close it. D…
Retraining Programs for Displaced Workers in the Post-Industrial Era
Widespread worker displacement is an increasing phenomenon in industrialized countries. Whether the result of globalization, increased technology or resource depletion, large numbers of people are being permanently displaced from work. The problem is more severe in regions where the unemployment base centres on a single industry or resource. In such areas there is often little chance of re-employment. This paper considers government-initiated pro…
