  • The circulation of a «fascist literature» in the italian democracy

    Open Access•Andréa Martini•ARTICLE•Revista de História das Ideias•2024

In an article published in The Wiener Library Bulletin in 1951, the historian and former partisan Giorgio Vaccarino broached the subject of the “fascist literature” circulating in Italy. Three years later, the anti-fascist literary scholar Giuseppe Tramarollo revisited the question in La Voce Repubblicana, declaring the dissemination of texts with a clear fascist matrix to be a threat to Italian democracy. This essay seeks to shed light on this c…

  • Fighting against ‘Apology of Fascism’

    Open Access•Andréa Martini•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern European History•2023

Although Italy was one of the first European countries to tolerate the existence of a fascist party, the democratic governments of its immediate postwar engaged in a genuine and important reflection on the means to counter the re-emergence of fascism. Thus Italy too, like its European counterparts, sought to conceive of itself as a militant democracy. This article aims to illuminate its efforts and its approach, and also to cast light on the evid…

  • Travelling to See, Reading to Believe

    Open Access•Andréa Martini•ARTICLE•Contemporary European History•2023

This article focuses on two practices which, while neglected by historiography, played a fundamental role in the re-emergence of the fascist community after 1945, namely travel and reading. Travel allowed fascists to realise that the political cause they were fighting for had remained alive even outside their own borders, and to strengthen and renew their transnational network, while reading books – often banned books – allowed them to reinforce …

  • The Re-emergence of Fascism and Its Impact on European Democracies in the Immediate Postwar Period

    Open Access•Andréa Martini•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•2022

After the end of Second World War, fascist movements re-emerged in many areas of Europe. This forced governments to consider counter-measures from the early days of the Cold War, when communism was seen as the main threat. Nevertheless, even studies produced in recent decades aimed at exploring the immediate postwar history of Europe using a more accurate and comprehensive approach than in the past have failed to pay sufficient attention to this …

  • Defeated? An analysis of Fascist memoirist literature and its success

    Andréa Martini•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 1

In this article the author analyses the Fascists’ ability, after the end of the war, to present a memory of the recent past which achieved its aims at least among a significant number of Italians. The success of the Fascist memoirist literature was helped by its tendency to replicate arguments made in post-war courts by people charged with collaborationism. Another important factor was the political authorities’ decision to bring the period of th…

This study aims to estimate the number of life years gained with quitting smoking in Italian smokers of both sexes, by number of cigarettes smoked per day (cig/day) and age at cessation. All-cause mortality tables by age, sex and smoking status were computed, based on Italian smoking data, and the survival curves of former and current smokers were compared. The more cig/day a man/woman smokes, and the younger his/her age of quitting smoking, the …
