    Open Access•Cas Wepener, Johan Cilliers•ARTICLE•Stellenbosch Theological Journal•2022

The similarities and differences regarding responses in the media to the phenomenon of lockdown liturgy in the Netherlands and South Africa is firstly explored in this article. The findings of Goyvaerts and Woude, which is based on their study of discussions in Dutch media, is briefly presented and thereafter compared to responses in the South African Afrikaans media. Based on this comparison, core themes are identified and discussed as creative …

  • Crossing boundaries and facing others

    Open Access•Johan Cilliers, Johan H Cilliers•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2021

The core question posed by this article is, ‘what are the characteristics of a transgressive rhetoric, as evidenced by preaching in South Africa, in particular in view of the transition to democracy, and as based on the African philosophy of Ubuntu?’ Or, the other way around, ‘what type of (homiletical) rhetoric was in fact needed to achieve the political transition in South Africa?’ Cognisance is taken in particular of the rhetorical structures …

  • Seeing, Sighing, Signing - Contours of a Vulnerable Homiletic

    Open Access•Johan Cilliers•ARTICLE•Scriptura•2017

In this article the many in-between spaces of paradox that characterise the society of South Africa, up to this day, are seen as liminal breeding grounds for what could be called a vulnerable homiletic. Three key concepts are discussed as being inherent to such a homiletic, namely seeing, sighing, and signing. These key concepts are exemplified by reference to sermons by former Archbishop of Cape Town, Dr Desmond Tutu in particular. The article c…

    Johan Cilliers•BOOK•A Space for Grace•2016

  • Cilliers, Johan Universiteit Stellenbosch Die optiek van homiletiek

    Open Access•Johan Cilliers•ARTICLE•Nederduitse Gereformeerde…•2013

This article explores the notion of preaching as a form of perception, in particular as pertaining to viewing life through the lenses of Scriptures. The aesthetical concept of “reframing” is utilised to argue that preaching as perception intends behavioral change of a second order (as opposed to first order, i.e. superficial change). Three aesthetical examples are introduced to illustrate this art of reframing, namely works by Duchamp, Zapiro, an…

  • Fides Quaerens Pulchrum

    Open Access•Johan Cilliers•ARTICLE•Scriptura•2012

In this article, the notion of 'desire' is critically interpreted in terms of the classic theological notion of 'quaerens' (as for instance in: fides quaerens intellectum; faith in search of understanding). 'Quaerens' indicates the quest for (or paradox of) something that is not yet attained, although already experienced, here understood as a quest for beauty - fides quaerens pulchrum. The concept of beauty is multi-layered, but traditionally it …

  • Within the enclave Profiling South African social and religious developments since 1994

    Open Access•Johan Cilliers, Ian Nell•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2011•Cited by: 2

The paper investigated religious and social transformations within a specific religious tradition in South Africa. After clarifying the charged concept of transformation , the authors showed that transformation is about more than changed systems and structures, for, on a deeper level, it is also about the change in relationships and attitudes between the different cultural groups in South Africa. The argument was supported by making use of data f…

  • Fides Quaerens Corporalitatem

    Open Access•Johan Cilliers, J H Cilliers•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2009

In the light of a number of paradigm shifts that have taken place in practical theological methodology, this article proposes an integrative approach that takes the fundamental role of embodiment into account. A brief discussion of the theological understanding of embodiment is followed by a reflection on certain liturgical implications, inter alia liturgical embodiment as immediate participation; as multi-sensory interpretative act; and as broke…

  • Skrifbeskouing en Skrifhantering

    Open Access•Johan Cilliers•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2008

In this article the intrinsic relationship between our views on and our use of scripture is proposed. This relationship is described in terms of two basic components of the reformed understanding of scripture, namely the accommodative and performative nature thereof. This is followed by an exposition of two fundamental misunderstandings pertaining to the abovementioned components as well as some suggestions for the profiling of a hermeneutics of …

Johan Cilliers, Cas Wepener•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2007

This article forms a part of a larger research project in the Paarl area of South Africa. This specific contribution comes from the field of liturgy. Ritual data were collected in several congregations by means of participatory action research. Some of the data gathered will be analyzed and interpreted here by means of ritual criticism. In this article, the theoretical foundation is briefly explained, as well as the specific way in which ritual c…

  • Die geheim van die prediking

    Open Access•Johan Cilliers•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2002

The secret of preaching: listening to the voice of the Biblical text This paper concentrates on the function of the Biblical text in preaching, contending that there can in fact be no preaching in the true sense of the word if the text is not honoured both in its content and form. It argues that a significant percentage of contemporary preaching has lost its Biblical integrity because (a) it does not understand the basic need for and character of…
