Lemon Valley, St Helena
This article presents the results of an historical and archaeological survey of Lemon Valley, in the South Atlantic island of St Helena. The valley was periodically used by 16th-century mariners during the early years of the Age of Discovery and permanently settled by the English East India Company from the 1660s. This article examines the Royal Navy's anti-slavery operations in the Atlantic Ocean during the mid-nineteenth century. It does so by means of an analysis of a single cruise – that of HMS Waterwitch between 1839 and 1843. Waterwitch was built in 1832 as a racing yacht of advanced, experimental design, achieving considerable success in this field. Church building fabrics on Romney Marsh and the Marshland Fringe
Romney Marsh is a region where few historic buildings now remain in the modern landscape. This paper examines the only group of historic monuments on the marsh in which stone was the principal medium, and where it was employed on a major scale—the parish church.
