The Needle in the Haystack
Rancher viewpoint diversity in human–wildlife coexistence management
Protected areas in Latin America are typically surrounded by ranching landscapes, where large carnivores such as the jaguar ( Panthera onca ), co‐habit with ranchers, which potentially causes negative interactions. It is crucial, however, recognize that effective coexistence hinges on developing conservation policies that not only address these negative interactions but also embrace the diversity of the landowners' perspectives, aligning with the…
Role Models in Action Through YouTube Videos for Engineering Community College Students
Community colleges provide broad access to a college degree due to their less expensive tuition, greater course time offerings, and more open admission policies compared to four-year universities as reported (Juszkiewicz, 2015). These institutions have great potential to diversify who chooses STEM, such as engineering. Such diverse representation is important, because students from different backgrounds can contribute new perspectives that foster…

Exploring the Tensions Between Masculinities and Connections with Faculty and Staff among Gay Latino Collegians
This study utilizes Gloria E. Anzaldúa's Border theory to explore how internalized messages of masculinities shape the ways that gay Latino men develop connections with university staff and faculty. Specifically, we highlight how such messages learned primarily in the context of the home create spaces of tension, nepantla, within heteronormative campus settings. We present portraits of five Latino collegians enrolled in a large public four-year i…
Student spacing and self-testing strategies and their associations with learning in an upper division microbiology course
Project-based engineering learning in college
This quantitative study examined student participation in an introductory project-based engineering course offered in fully face-to-face and hybrid course modes ( N = 160). This course attempted to counteract trends of decreased student motivation and high attrition rates among engineering majors. Mixed-design analysis of variance examined differences in motivational constructs including student self-efficacy, effort regulation, and interest in e…

Group Membership and Social and Personal Identities as Psychosocial Coping Resources to Psychological Consequences of the Covid-19 Confinement
The confinement imposed by measures to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic may in the short and medium term have psychological and psychosocial consequences affecting the well-being and mental health of individuals. Queer love in the lives of gay Latino men in college
This qualitative study employed portraiture methodology and the analytical tool of thinking with theory to comprehend how gay Latino men enrolled at a four-year university experienced heteronormativity in different settings (e.g. with family and at college) and how these influenced their connections to love. Using stories from five participants, this research revealed how students navigated borderlands as a result of their sexuality and cultural …

Amar sólo por vencer
This article explores the short novel Amar sólo por vencer by María de Zayas (included in her book Desengaños amorosos, 1647), through the literary topic of the unequal wedding: a rogue, pretending to be a nobleman, seduces a noblewoman with the promise of marriage. In this piece, Zayas recreates a typical picaresque episode within a protofeminist discourse, depicting a young woman as a victim of a familiar vengeance. This picaresque influence in…

The first part includes an historical review regarding the State in Bolivia, from its founding to the present. The second part is focused on the analysis of, and relation between, the partisan powers and perception of statehood, a…
Late Holocene vegetation, fire, climate and upper forest line dynamics in the Podocarpus National Park, southeastern Ecuador
Late Holocene vegetation, fire, climate and upper forest line dynamics were studied based on detailed pollen and charcoal analyses. Two sediment cores, from the Rabadilla de Vaca mire (RVM) and the Valle Pequeño bog (VP), with an age of about 2100 and 1630 cal yrs b.p., respectively, were taken at the modern upper forest line in the Parque Nacional Podocarpus (Podocarpus National Park) in southeastern Ecuador. The two pollen records reflect relat…
