  • Ecosystem change in the South Pare Mountain bloc, Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania

    Open Access•Jemma Finch, Rob Marchant et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 17

Palaeoecological evidence is used to investigate climatic and anthropogenic drivers of vegetation and fire dynamics through the past ~1200 years in the Eastern Arc Mountains, Tanzania. Pollen and charcoal analyses are supported by a chronology derived from five accelerator mass spectrometry ages, a 137 Cs activity profile and marker horizons from two exotic pollen taxa. Pollen indicator taxa are used to develop a series of environmental indices, …

  • The history and development of Quaternary Science in South Africa

Michael E Meadows, Jemma Finch et al.•ARTICLE•South African Geographical Journal•2016•References: 23

Research in Quaternary Science in South Africa has developed rapidly over recent decades, growing into a strongly interdisciplinary and increasingly applied science. A historical overview of the discipline is provided, outlining its roots and placing the first studies in southern Africa in context, highlighting the contributions of pioneering researchers within the field here. The inherent methodological difficulties of working in a semi-arid env…

  • A palaeoecological investigation into the role of fire and human activity in the development of montane grasslands in East Africa

    Open Access•Jemma Finch, Rob Marchant•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 7

  • Late Quaternary vegetation dynamics in a biodiversity hotspot, the Uluguru Mountains of Tanzania

    Open Access•Jemma Finch, Melanie J Leng et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2009

Late Quaternary vegetation history and environmental changes in a biodiverse tropical ecosystem are inferred from pollen, charcoal and carbon isotope evidence derived from a ∼ 48,000-yr sedimentary record from the Uluguru Mountains, a component of the Eastern Arc Mountains of Kenya and Tanzania. Results indicate that Eastern Arc forest composition has remained relatively stable during the past ∼ 48,000 yr. Long-term environmental stability of the…

  • A late Quaternary pollen sequence from Mfabeni Peatland, South Africa: Reconstructing forest history in Maputaland

    Open Access•Jemma Finch, Jemma M Finch et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

This paper documents a continuous ∼ 44,000-yr pollen record derived from the Mfabeni Peatland on the Maputaland Coastal Plain. A detailed fossil pollen analysis indicates the existence of extensive Podocarpus -abundant coastal forests before ∼ 33,000 cal yr BP. The onset of wetter local conditions after this time is inferred from forest retreat and the development of swampy conditions. Conditions during the last glacial maximum (∼ 21,000 cal yr B…
