Chasing the wind? Half a century of economic strategy documents in Northern Ireland∗
This article reviews the 11 major economic policy documents that were presented in Northern Ireland (NI) during 1955–99. Notwithstanding the intentions of these policy documents the performance of the NI economy has been disappointing. Manufacturing Use of Business Services in the Two Parts of Ireland
This article measures the internal and external use of eleven business services by samples of independent manufacturing firms located in Northern Ireland (NI) and the Republic of Ireland (ROI). The location of open market service suppliers is analysed and the adequacy of the regional service supply infrastructure is examined. In this article, we present a comparative analysis of the competitiveness and performance of business service companies in Scotland and Ireland. Several dimensions of performance are investigated for five industries: market research, management consultancy, product design, graphic design and advertising. Value‐added per person is almost identical in the two areas, but Irish offices achieved a much greater degree of export orientation (16% of sale…
