A Bayesian approach to planning support on two-lane rural roads for automated vehicles
This paper presents an on-road study examining the interaction between Level 2 automated vehicles (AVs) and the geometric features of two-lane rural roads. These roads constitute the largest percentage of the road network in most countries. Their complex geometric features and lack of design consistency present a significant challenge for the operation of automated vehicles (AVs). Although AV systems aim to reduce driver workload and improve road…
Evaluation of the Influence of Road Geometry on Overtaking Cyclists on Two-Lane Rural Roads
Road cycling, both individually and in groups, is common in Spain, where most two-lane rural roads have no cycle lanes. Due to this, and the difference in speed between drivers and cyclists, the overtaking manoeuvre is one of the most dangerous interactions. This study analyses how road geometry influences the overtaking manoeuvre performance. Field data of 1355 overtaking manoeuvres were collected using instrumented bicycles, riding along differ…
Driver Behavior When Overtaking Cyclists Riding in Different Group Configurations on Two-Lane Rural Roads
The presence of cyclists on Spanish rural roads is ever increasing and currently frequent, and thus becoming a serious safety concern. In rural environments, the risk of a crash is higher than in rural areas. The main cause is the higher speed of motor vehicles during overtaking manoeuvres. This manoeuvre is especially challenging when cyclists ride in groups as they may change size, length, shape, and speed along their route. These variables and…
Micromobility Users’ Behaviour and Perceived Risk during Meeting Manoeuvres
Mobility patterns and lifestyles have changed in recent years in cities worldwide, thanks to the strong rise in modes of travel commonly referred to as micromobility. In this context, e-scooters have experienced a great rise globally which has led to an increase of crashes involving this type of micromobility vehicle in urban areas. Thus, there is a need to study e-scooter users' behaviour and their interaction with cyclists. This research aimed …
Colonial art as ethnic unifier
The use of religious art and architecture for building community among immigrant communities in the United States is a well-documented phenomenon. But how is the use of religious culture adapted for a multinational, multi-ethnic and multiracial immigrant enclave that witnesses high levels of change and turnover? This paper draws from ethnographic work in the Catholic Church that serves the neighborhoods of Wynwood and Allapattah in Miami, Florida…
The Social Context of Organized Nonbelief
Many recent social scientific studies have noted that the percentage of Americans with no religious affiliation is on the rise, but few have examined the nonbelieverorganizationsthat some of these 'nones' might join. This study uses an original data set, the first attempt at documenting the population of local nonbeliever organizations in the United States, to explore where these groups are more likely to flourish. Though one might assume that le…
Mental disorder among nonreligious adolescents
This study is the first of its kind to investigate mental disorder among nonreligious adolescents. In this paper, we report three main findings based on data from the National Comorbidity Survey of Adolescents. First, nonreligious adolescents on average have higher rates of mental disorder than adolescents who identify as religious. Second, there is variability in rates of mental disorder among the three types of nonreligious adolescents, with at…
Relational Work in Economic Sociology
Understanding how economic transactions are constitutive in the development, maintenance, and solidification of relationships has been of particular importance for economic sociologists in recent years. Following the work of Viviana Zelizer, economic sociologists have expanded from a purely network‐based approach of analyzing economic action to consider how and in what ways relations shape economic life. This paper provides a review of Zelizer's …
