  • Silent entrepreneuring

    Open Access•Anna Wettermark, Karin Berglund•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 51

Entrepreneurship is often understood as acting boldly on the market, broadcasting one’s endeavours in persuasive success stories. We, in contrast, seek to understand less flamboyant entrepreneurial practices by examining the creativity and innovations pursued by a gendered and marginalized professional group in the public sector. Through an ethnographic study of hospital pharmacists during the COVID-19 pandemic, we seek to understand how pharmaci…

  • Social entrepreneurship from margin to centre

    Open Access•Karin Berglund, Lara Pecis•ARTICLE•Business History•2025•References: 36

This article explores social entrepreneurship (SE) historically, focusing on the interplay between the US entrepreneurial state, WWII geopolitics, and shifting gender roles. Drawing on the historiography of Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper, it traces how SE has historically unfolded as a collective, collaborative, and open endeavour capable of driving social transformation. Hopper’s work in computing reveals three situated SE practices: stepping …

  • Paying lip service to gender inequality – EU rural development policy in Sweden

    Open Access•Katarina Pettersson, Helene Ahl et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Place & Culture•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 31

While research has pointed to the lack of gender mainstreaming in rural and agricultural policy, how rural policy determines what is seen as problems of gender inequality in the first place and how it constructs men and women in relation to rural development remains unexplored. In this article we perform an in-depth analysis of how rural policy constructs gender inequality problems and gendered subjects. We employ the 'What's the problem represen…

  • Conceptualising feminist resistance in the postfeminist terrain

Open Access•Karin Berglund, Helene Ahl et al.•ARTICLE•Gender in Management An…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 14

Purpose In this paper, women entrepreneurs are seen as leaders and women leaders as entrepreneurial, making both groups an easy target of postfeminist expectations, governed by calls to embody the entrepreneurial self. Acknowledging that the entrepreneurial self has its roots in the universal, rational and autonomous subject, which was shaped in a male form during the Enlightenment, the purpose of this study is to conceptualise feminist resistanc…

  • Hidden in the limelight

    Open Access•Lara Pecis, Karin Berglund•ARTICLE•Organization•2021

Innovation is filled with aspirations for solutions to problems, and for laying the groundwork for new technological and social breakthroughs. When a concept is so positively charged, the hopes expressed may create blindness to potential shortcomings and deadlocks. To disclose innovation blind spots, we approach innovation from a feminist viewpoint. We see innovation as a context that changes historically, and as revolution, offering alternative …

  • Innovation Beyond Borders

    Open Access•Karin Berglund, Katarina Pettersson•ARTICLE•Feminist Encounters A Journal of…•2021

In this article a feminist intervention is undertaken to mobilise alternative innovation discourses that recognise activity and passivity as enmeshed – as ‘pactive’. Activity is found to perpetuate the mainstream innovation discourse, aligned with a male construct of an active and rational being. Thus, passivity is viewed as a concept that helps problematise, analyse, negotiate and transgress the discursive borders of innovation. The study is emp…

  • Women's entrepreneurship, neoliberalism and economic justice in the postfeminist era

Open Access•Karin Berglund, Helene Ahl et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2018•Cited by: 29•References: 19

Since the early 1990s, there has been investment in women's entrepreneurship policy (WEP) in Sweden, which continued until 2015. During the same period, Sweden assumed neoliberal policies that profoundly changed the position of women within the world of work and business. The goals for WEP changed as a result, from entrepreneurship as a way to create a more equal society, to the goal of unleashing women's entrepreneurial potential so they can con…

  • Responsibilising the next generation

Open Access•Karin Berglund, Monica Lindgren et al.•ARTICLE•Organization•2017

In this article, our interest is in what subjectivities are fostered among schoolchildren through the recent introduction of entrepreneurship initiatives in primary and secondary school. The educational terrain is but one example where entrepreneurship has been discursively transformed during recent decades from the notion of starting businesses into a general approach to life itself in the advancement of neoliberal societies. The inherently elit…

  • Using pictures and artefacts in a PAR process to disclose new wor(l)ds of entrepreneurship

Open Access•Karin Berglund, Karin Anna Elisabeth Berglund et al.•ARTICLE•Action Research•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Drawing on Freire, this article elaborates on how pictures and artefacts benefit processes of ‘prise de conscience’ and ‘conscientization’ among those with powerful voices. Wor(l)d-making was unfolded in the Swedish think-and-do tank, ‘the Smithy’, emphasizing the intrinsically political nature of promoting ‘societal entrepreneurship’ (SE). New words for SE were formulated and a more inclusive world was discerned where all had a role, not just as…

  • Constructions of entrepreneurship

    Open Access•Karin Berglund, Anders W Johansson•ARTICLE•Journal of Enterprising…•2007•Cited by: 6•References: 7

Purpose The purpose of this research paper is to investigate opposing versions of entrepreneurship and to introduce a metaphor to stimulate a dialogue about the diversity and complexity of enterprising communities. Design/methodology/approach A discourse framework is developed in order to describe dominating - and even new and challenging - versions of entrepreneurship. The discourse analysis is presented in three steps: the introductory text to …

  • Entrepreneurship, discourses and conscientization in processes of regional development

    Karin Berglund, Anders W Johansson•ARTICLE•Entrepreneurship and Regional…•2007•Cited by: 8•References: 3

This paper is based upon a regional development project in a 'vulnerable' Swedish region consisting of three municipalities. At a first glance, this is a region in decline that is lacking in entrepreneurial initiatives. During a crucial time period the project 'Diversity in Entrepreneurship' (DiE) was launched to help the region to become more entrepreneurial and inclusive. An underlying logic was built into the project, which is associated with …
