The Dark Side of Medieval Sustainability
This article explores the ambivalent nature of «sustainability» in late-medieval Alpine communities, showing how communal statutes reveal a social rather than ecological logic behind environmental regulation. Through examples from the Western and Central Alps, it argues that practices designed to preserve forests and pastures primarily protected economic resources and reflected existing social hierarchies. Forest management and pasture access wer…
Economic Sustainability vs. Environmental Sustainability
Since the 1990s, the concept of sustainability has gained increasing attention in historical studies. Research has focused on the sustainable exploitation of environmental resources for economic purposes. This economic emphasis has often obscured ecological consequences, particularly on ecosystem balance and animal populations. This article describes the enduring forms of environmental management and commodification that developed in 1250–1500 in…
Commons and Dynamics of Power in Medieval Southern Europe
This article presents a comparative analysis of the commons in two broad regions of medieval southern Europe: northern Italy and the Iberian Peninsula’s Duero Plateau. Recent scholarship on different regions of northern Europe has highlighted the centrality of common lands to both agrosystems and the organization of communities, drawing on the economic theories of Elinor Ostrom and generally focusing on the early modern period. It has also sugges…
The aim of this essay is to study the public resources and commons in Lombardy during the Early Middle Ages. Through the study of written sources, from the Lombard laws to charters preserved in ecclesiastical archives (from judicial processes to sales, donations and exchanges), these pages will interpret the slow appearance of references to the forms of exploitation of public resources and commons. References which are more and more explicit and …
