When wildfires reward incumbents
This study examines how wildfires are associated with municipal electoral outcomes in Chile, a topic that has received limited attention in the literature on natural disasters and elections. Using georeferenced data for the period 2012–2021, the analysis looks at how wildfire magnitude interacts with pre-existing territorial risk and with the probability that incumbent mayors are re-elected. Understanding the Relationship between Depression and Chronic Diseases Such as Diabetes and Hypertension
There is a bi-directional relationship between depression and chronic illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension. This comorbidity is associated with higher mortality risk and diminishes the efficacy of interventions. The specific mechanisms of this mutual influence are still not fully understood, and most intervention protocols address these conditions separately. This study aims to improve our understanding of this relationship. We interviewed…
Technology-Assisted Collaborative Care Program for People with Diabetes and/or High Blood Pressure Attending Primary Health Care
The comorbidity of depression with physical chronic diseases is usually not considered in clinical guidelines. This study evaluated the feasibility of a technology-assisted collaborative care (TCC) program for depression in people with diabetes and/or high blood pressure (DM/HBP) attending a primary health care (PHC) facility in Santiago, Chile. Twenty people diagnosed with DM/HBP having a Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score ≥ 15 points were rec…
Understanding Non-Adherence From the Inside
Patients' low adherence to medical treatment in chronic illnesses is one of the biggest public health problems. Numerous studies attend to the diverse factors associated with patient adherence. However, little research has been done to explore patients' reasons for non-compliance from their own point of view. In this article, we aim to understand patient non-adherence using dialogical self-theory and qualitative research methods. We interviewed 5…
