Subject realization in Uruangnirin
This study uses a quantitative approach to investigate subject realization in 659 clauses in Uruangnirin, an endangered Austronesian language of eastern Indonesia. In this language, subjects may be referenced in the clause with an NP, pronoun or zero pronoun, and they are optionally indexed on the verb. We establish that the most common combination is to drop the subject in the clause while indexing it on the verb. We find that verbs are more lik…
Successes and shortcomings of phonological accounts of Scandinavian object shift
Object shift (OS) is a word order phenomenon in Scandinavian languages where under some circumstances the object appears before a sentential adverb. Despite the frequent assumptions that word order is determined in syntax, and despite the link of OS and syntactic phenomena like V2, there is no consensus that OS is a syntactic phenomenon. Particularly, it has been observed that OS targets specifically prosodically weak elements. This motivated rec…
Verb-based restrictions on noun incorporation across languages
Although some characteristics of incorporating verbs and non-incorporating verbs have been proposed in previous studies, little systematic cross-linguistic research has been done on restrictions on the types of verbs that incorporate nouns. Knowledge about possible verb-based restrictions on noun incorporation may, however, provide important insights for theoretical approaches to noun incorporation, in particular regarding the question to what ex…
Practicalities of language data collection and management in and around Indonesia
Researchers use different approaches when collecting and managing primary language materials during fieldwork. Yet it is important that this work is done in a transparent way, so that it can be used by other researchers, who might have other aims, as well as by the speaker community who might want to use or take note of the collected materials. In this article we use our research experience in language data collection in and around Indonesia in f…
Tensed evidentials
To gain more insight into evidentiality, the grammatical marking of information source, it is worth studying the category in its relation to other grammatical categories. This study explores tensed evidentials, morphemes in which tense and evidentiality are fused, in 36 languages from four macro-areas (North America, South America, Eurasia, and Papunesia). The study reveals several interactions between tense values and evidential values. As oppos…
