Multilingualism and the Jews of Byzantium in the Middle Period
The Jewish minority in Byzantium in the ninth to twelfth centuries was mainly Greek-speaking, as is now clear from the Cairo Genizah discoveries. However, Greek education was rare, and it was Hebrew that served as the written and learned language, as well as for prayer and bible reading. A unique, artificial form of Greek was used to translate bible readings: it combined Greek vocabulary with Hebrew syntax. Aramaic was used in synagogues for spec…
Japheth in the Tents of Shem: Greek Bible Translations in Byzantine Judaism
Much scholarly attention has been paid to the Greek Bible translations employed in the Byzantine Church, whereas those used in the Byzantine synagogue have so far been largely ignored. Nicholas de Lange attempts to remedy this lack by collecting together all the available evidence for such translations from the Cairo Genizah fragments and other manuscript sources, setting it within its context in Byzantine Judaism. He traces the history of the tr…
Wide Range Achievement Test in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Test-Retest Stability
The principal goal of this descriptive study was to establish the test-retest stability of the Reading, Spelling, and Arithmetic subtest scores of the Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT-3) across two administrations in individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Participants (N = 31) were males ages 6-22 years (M = 15.2, SD = 4.0) who were part of a larger ongoing longitudinal study of brain development in children and adults with autism spectrum d…
Metabolic costs and evolutionary implications of human brain development
Significance The metabolic costs of brain development are thought to explain the evolution of humans’ exceptionally slow and protracted childhood growth; however, the costs of the human brain during development are unknown. We used existing PET and MRI data to calculate brain glucose use from birth to adulthood. We find that the brain’s metabolic requirements peak in childhood, when it uses glucose at a rate equivalent to 66% of the body’s restin…

Jews, in Byzantium

Jewish Reception of Greek Bible Versions: Studies in Their Use in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages
The authors of the essays collected in this volume are all concerned with the Jewish transmission and use of Greek translations of the biblical books from Late Antiquity to the early modern period. It is only in recent years that the idea of such a Jewish transmission has gained acceptance, and the present volume represents the first attempt to bring together contributions from specialists in a number of areas, including not only biblical and Jew…
An Early Hebrew-Greek Biblical Glossary from the Cairo Genizah
The present paper contains the edition, commentary and palaeographical analysis of a unique fragment of a bilingual Biblical Hebrew-Greek glossary from the Cairo Genizah. This glossary is preserved as the lower text of the palimpsest manuscript Taylor-Schechter F 17. 4 from the Cambridge University Library. The preserved part of the glossary concerns difficult words from the books of Exodus, Isaiah and Jeremiah, and is written in two scripts : He…

Prier et étudier à Byzance
A study of Jewish scholarship and worship in the Byzantine empire in its heyday before the Latin conquest of 1204 reveals, on the one hand, how closely they conform to contemporary Jewish models from other countries, and, at the same time, certain features that mark Byzantine Jewry out as unique. Foremost among these is the use of Greek Bible translations, that stand in a tradition going back to the ancient world

Byzantium in the Cairo Genizah
On the occasion of the Byzantine Symposium at Cambridge in March 1990, an exhibition of manuscripts of Byzantine interest recovered from the Cairo Genizah was mounted in the University Library. Although these manuscripts have been in Cambridge for nearly a century, they are still not as well known as they deserve to be, and the exhibition provoked a good deal of interest among participants. It therefore seemed useful to provide this more permanen…
