Very low neighbourhood income limits participation post stroke
Our results indicate that very low neighbourhood income is linked with decreased participation during the first two years following stroke. Our findings indicate the need for further investigation of this relationship, and the importance of close follow-up of stroke survivors living in very low-income contexts
Re-Engagement in Pre-Stroke Personal Projects Six Months Post-Stroke
Little is known about the relationship between the characteristics of pre-stroke occupations and the continuation of these occupations post-stroke. Therefore the purpose of this study was to estimate the proportion of pre-stroke personal projects that are continued at 6 months post-stroke and to explore characteristics of projects that may be related to their continuation. Using a cross-sectional study design at 6 months post-stroke, 67 community…
Health Services for Linguistic Minorities in a Bilingual Setting
We explore in this qualitative research the challenges faced by bilingual health and social services professionals in a Canadian bilingual setting, as well as the strategies used to overcome them. Eight focus groups were conducted with a total of 43 bilingual Francophone professionals who offered services in French in 21 health and social service organizations in eastern Ontario, Canada. We highlight linguistic issues affecting a minority Francop…
Transformative Radicalization
While a consensus has emerged concerning the role radicalization plays in persuading Westerners to participate in terrorism, little research investigates the cognitive processes inherent to radicalization processes. Transformative learning theory, developed from the sciences in education and rehabilitation, offers an interdisciplinary lens with which to study the processes of personal change associated with radicalization. Transformative radicali…
Homegrown terrorism and transformative learning
Since 2001, a preponderance of terrorist activity in Europe, North America, and Australia, has involved radicalized Westerners inspired by al Qaeda. Described as ‘homegrown terrorism’, perpetrators are citizens and residents born, raised, and educated within the countries they attack. While most scholars and policy-makers agree that radicalization plays a central role in persuading Westerners to embrace terrorism, little research properly investi…
Conducting Qualitative Metasynthesis Research
The need to synthesize qualitative research in order to inform fields of study has been highlighted as a critical imperative in recent years. Since that time, there have been a number of attempts to identify methodological approaches to achieving such a goal. Despite some notable efforts in this regard, the metasynthesis research approach continues to be somewhat elusive with regard to its steps and procedures. The authors of this article describ…
