A qualitative study of motivation to read for pleasure with adolescent struggling readers using a theoretical model
A mixed method study explored a theoretical model that employed, combined, and added to the theories of self-determination, the reading engagement perspective, and the four-phase model of interest to motivate adolescent struggling readers to read for pleasure. The model adds to the existing body of research because it specifies an instructional starting point focusing on the powerful intrinsic motivation to read constructs of curiosity, involveme…
An investigation of stigma in individuals receiving treatment for substance abuse
Brief Report
The responses of 500 male prisoners to the 150 items of the Personal Orientation Inventory were clustered, using hierarchical linkage analysis. Six second-order clusters accounted for all the items. K-R 20 reliabilities of these clusters were comparable to those of the first-order clusters. The relative validity of cluster scores and scale scores remains to be determined
Cluster Analysis of Personal Orientation Inventory Items in a Prison Sample
The responses of 500 male prisoners to the 150 items of the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) were clustered, using elementary linkage analysis. Five major clusters accounted for 74 of the 150 items in the POI. K-R 20 reliabilities of these clusters compared quite favorably with those of the original scales, but scale scores could be predicted with only fair accuracy from cluster scores. The invariance of the present solution and the relative …

Internal Consistency of Poi Scales
Data from a sample of 500 male prisoners were analyzed to obtain K-R 20 estimates of internal consistency for the 12 scales on the Personal Orientation Inventory. As might be expected from the varied content of the items in each scale, their internal consistency was low to moderate
Scale Membership and Direction of Scoring for Items on the Personal Orientation Inventory
Two tables are presented, showing the scale membership and direction of scoring for each of the POI's 150 items (a) by scale, and (b) by item
Item Overlap and the “Built-In” Factor Structure of the Personal Orientation Inventory
5 sets of empirical correlations were factored, along with correlations based solely on the (corrected) numbers of overlapping items in the Personal Orientation Inventory. The factor structure of the item-overlap data resembled that of the empirical data, although differences were also noted. Alternative interpretations of the findings were considered

Test Adequacy as a Function of Item Structuring and Substantive Homogeneity
The present findings provide some further support for two of Fiske's hypotheses: the adequacy of a test is a direct function of the structuring of the items and their substantive homogeneity

Wais Subtest Characteristics of Institutionalized Retardates
WAIS subtest norms for two samples of institutionalized retardates, one from the East Coast and the other from the West Coast, were compared. The correlation between them was high and the differences small. Together, they provide a set of norms based on the performance of 945 Ss

Is Item Overlap Responsible for a “Built-in” Factor Structure
3 sets of empirical data, 2 from samples of college students and 1 from a sample of psychopathic felons, were factored, along with correlations based solely on the number of overlapping items in the Personal Orientation Inventory. The factor structure found in the item-overlap correlations closely resembled that found in the empirical data, but whether this “built-in” factor structure is attributable to item overlap per se appears to be an unansw…
Normative and Reliability Data for the Standard and the Cross-Validated Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale
In 1960 Marlowe and Crowne published a new scale for the measurement of the social desirability response and later (Crowne & Marlowe, 1964) reviewed relevant research. Goldfried (1964) did a cross-validation of the MC items, which resulted in 17 items for males and 15 items for females being retained as valid. Normative data for the standard and cross-validated (CV) forms of the MC and reliability of the two forms are reported here. Ss were 425 m…

Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale Performance of Familial and Undifferentiated Mental Subnormals
Patients with the diagnoses of familial and undifferentiated mental retardation are often treated as a homogeneous group in research on mental subnormality, particularly in psychological studies where intelligence is a variable. This study investigated the homogeneity of subtest performance of familial and undifferentiated retardates1 on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale ( WAIS) . From a larger pool of WAIS data, 40 familial and 40 undifferen…
