The streets belong to us!’: An interview with writer Şeyda Kurt about Radical Tenderness1
Şeyda Kurt already realized in her childhood: the streets belong to us. Last year, she has published the bestseller Radikale Zärtlichkeit: Warum Liebe politisch ist (‘Radical tenderness: Why love is political’) (2021) and graciously granted me an interview about what moves her as a journalist. The conversation took place in Café Südblock (‘Café South Block’) at Berlin’s Kotti (Kottbusser Tor in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district). That day the backgroun…

A postmigrant contrapuntal reading of the refugee crisis and its discourse: ‘Foreigners out! Schlingensief’s Container’
Contemplating the coronavirus crisis through a postmigrant lens?: From segregative refugee accommodations and camps to a vision of solidarity
This chapter takes the coronavirus pandemic that first emerged in December 2019 as a springboard to ref lect on how society deals with forced migration from a postmigrant perspective. Such a theoretical vantage seeks to 'demigratize' research on forced migration (Römhild 2017). Analytical inquiry then is not a mode of special research on refugees but rather it investigates the societal power relations and social inequalities that affect all human…
Postmigration: Art, Culture, and Politics in Contemporary Europe
The concept of »postmigration« has recently gained importance in the context of European societies' obsession with migration and integration along with emerging new forms of exclusion and nationalisms. This book introduces ongoing debates on the developing concept of »postmigration« and how it can be applied to arts and culture. While the concept has mainly gained traction in the cultural scene in Berlin, Germany, the contributions expand the fie…
Black-Palestinian Transnational Solidarity: Renewals, Returns, and Practice
This introductory essay outlines the context for this special issue of the Journal of Palestine Studies on Black-Palestinian transnational solidarity (BPTS). Through the analytic of “renewal,” the authors point to the recent increase in individual and collective energies directed toward developing effective, reciprocal, and transformative political relationships within various African-descendant and Palestinian communities around the world. Drawi…

Eine Vision von Vielfalt: Das Stadtleben aus postmigrantischer Perspektive
Solo für Viele. Ein Hörerlebnis durch Innsbruck
Einleitung
Postmigrantische Visionen: Erfahrungen - Ideen - Reflexionen

Thank You, Black Twitter”: State Violence, Digital Counterpublics, and Pedagogies of Resistance
In this article, I examine the role of Black Twitter as a “digital counterpublic” that enables critical pedagogy, political organizing, and both symbolic and material forms of resistance to anti-Black state violence within the United States. Focusing primarily on post-Ferguson events, I spotlight the ways that Black people have used Black Twitter and other digital counterpublics to engage in forms of pedagogy that reorganize relations of surveill…
From Ferguson to Palestine: Reimagining Transnational Solidarity Through Difference
Using the genre of life writing, I explore how the praxis of Palestine delegation work spotlighted the contours, possibilities, and limits of how I understood and performed Black-Palestinian political solidarity. Focusing on three particular experiences that stem from a 2014 "Palestine to Ferguson" solidarity delegation, I examine how the trip created spaces for critical reflection, self-critique, and reconsideration of my own identity as a polit…

Representin(g): Negotiating Multiple Roles and Identities in the Field and Behind the Desk
In this article, the author examines the dilemmas that emerged in his role as teacher-researcher in Hip-Hop Lit, a hip-hop-centered literature class within an evening education program. Specifically, the author examines the complex and often competing roles and identities that he performed within the research context, as well as during the process of ethnographic writing. The author details how these roles and identities were mediated by the vari…

New possibilities: (Re)engaging Black male youth within community‐based educational spaces
Despite the assertion that due to an Obama presidency America has become a post‐racial society, Black males still face a unique social crisis. In this article, we hold that both race and gender continue to work in tandem to produce a certain set of social outcomes for young Black men in America despite this assertion. The educational, economic, and social mobility of young Black men is often limited due to structural constraints that are exacerba…

Schooling Teachers, Schooling Ourselves: Insights and Reflections from Teaching K-12 Teachers How to Use Hip-hop to Educate Students
Hip-hop-based education (HHBE) research analyzes how hip-hop culture is used to produce favorable educational outcomes. Despite its richness, the work reveals little about how to prepare practicing K-12 teachers to use HHBE toward the critical ends reflected in extant HHBE literature. In this article, we challenge many tacit assumptions of HHBE research by examining the curricular and pedagogical wants and needs of in-service teachers who are int…

Bringing back sweet (and not so sweet) memories: The cultural politics of memory, hip‐hop, and generational identities
This article examines the salience of collective ‘memory’ and ‘remembering’ among a group of students in Hip‐Hop Lit, a hip‐hop centered English literature course that I co‐taught at ‘Howard High School,’ an urban high school in the Northeastern United States. Specifically, this article examines the memory work that occurred within Hip‐Hop Lit in response to the students’ interactions with one of the course texts, Things Done Changed by rapper No…

Using Multimedia to Engage African American Children in Classroom Discourse
The purpose of this study is to examine the discourses that emerged among third- and fourth-grade African American students and their teachers as they read stories about the Underground Railroad and complete a computer module. The study is framed by emergent, sociocultural, and critical race perspectives. Qualitative methods are used to determine the amount and quality of science discourse that emerged in three urban classrooms. Results show cult…
