Reparation for extractivist genocide
There has been increasing focus on the links between genocide and extractive megaprojects. Meanwhile, proposals for a ‘just transition’ to low carbon energy are increasingly concerned with ecological, social and cultural repair for harm caused by fossil fuel extraction. Yet there has been limited attention to proposals for reparation that might follow from recognition of (i) the genocidal harm attendant upon energy resource extraction and (ii) th…
The Genocide-Ecocide Nexus in Sudan
This article works with and develops the framework of the genocide-ecocide nexus to examine the relationship between environmental destruction, capitalist expansion, and genocide in Sudan. Arguing that they are more fundamentally interconnected than has tended to be recognized, it discusses how multiple rural, primarily subsistence and place-based communities on Sudan’s exploited peripheral regions have been affected by these dynamics over severa…
Genocide in Sudan as Colonial Ecology
This article presents a novel theoretical and empirical account of the genesis and constitution of genocide in Sudan. To do so, it brings developments in critical genocide studies, notably the colonial and international 'turns' and renewed attention to the scholarship of Lemkin, into dialogue with theoretical arguments about processual ontologies, complexity theory, and assemblage thinking. The latter provide a conceptual vocabulary to rethink th…
Social death and the loss of a 'world
This article explores Claudia Card's hypothesis that social death is the distinctive harm of genocide. Drawing on original in-depth interviews with individuals from the genocide-affected regions of Darfur and the Nuba Mountains in Sudan (now living in, and interviewed in, the US and the UK), I illustrate the value and validity of the concept of social death as a phenomenological lens for understanding the depth, extent and character of genocide's…
