Dangerously ignorant or radically environmentalist? A review and a case study of pollination knowledge systems
Ecological livelihoods of farmers and pollinators in the Himalayas
In farming communities dependent on the cultivation of pollinator‐dependent crops, the livelihoods of farmers are inextricably linked with pollinator health. A global pollination crisis interlinked with a crisis of food production and farmer livelihoods, exacerbated by processes of socio‐environmental change, is emblematic of the Anthropocene and of the kinds of ecosocial problems with which critical physical geography (CPG) engages. We propose e…
Action Research
Given the shared processes and value systems of action research and deliberative democracy, the former is a well-suited methodology for research connected to the latter. Both action research and deliberative democracy are grounded in principles of inclusion and equity, aimed at the co-generation of knowledge, and oriented towards action. More than a methodology to simply investigate the processes and impacts of deliberation, action research is a …

Research Methods in Deliberative Democracy
Research Methods in Deliberative Democracy is the first book that brings together a wide range of methods used in the study of deliberative democracy. It offers thirty-one different methods that scholars use for theorizing, measuring, exploring, or applying deliberative democracy. Each chapter presents one method by explaining its utility in deliberative democracy research and providing guidance on its application by drawing on examples from prev…
Towards the Recognition and Integration of Action Research and Deliberative Democracy
Because of the shared underlying value systems of action research (AR) and deliberative democracy (DD), the former can be a powerful means for engaging the academy in the latter. AR and DD are both grounded in principles of inclusion, equity, the co-generation of knowledge, and action. In making the case for the integration of AR and DD, we describe their commonalities and place AR in the context of other forms of engaged scholarship. We review o…
Anthropological Contributions to Experiential Learning in International and Intercultural Contexts
Conversations about how to create meaningful and significant experiential learning opportunities for students in international and intercultural contexts are increasingly commonplace in academic institutions. With over a century dedicated to the development and refinement of a powerful set of methodological, attitudinal, conceptual, and theoretical tools for cross-cultural understanding and engagement, anthropology has much to offer these convers…
Putting the Anthropological Toolkit to Use in International and Intercultural Learning
In spite of the breadth and depth of anthropologists' knowledge of and experience with intercultural and international dynamics, we have done little as a field to tout this knowledge and its relevance and insert it into broader conversations about study abroad, service-learning, and other kinds of experiential learning. The contributions we do make are more idiosyncratic and happen as a result of anthropologists being in positions of influence in…
Creating Systemic Change
How do you lay the groundwork for systemic change in such a way that those within the system take ownership of both the transformation and the transformed system? The short answer is strategically, subversively, humbly and patiently. The longer answer can be gleaned from a project we've just completed that brought land use, with all of its social, economic and environmental dimensions, to the forefront of public awareness in Kalamazoo County, Mic…
Moving Beyond the Illness
The work presented here, exploratory in nature, uses a comparative and qualitative approach to understand the factors associated with the ability of individuals with severe and persistent mental illness to successfully gain and maintain employment. Based on open‐ended interviews with individuals in an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) program, we compare the experiences of those who have been successful gaining and maintaining employment, with …
Ethnographic Research and Programmatic Outcomes
This paper stems from an ongoing effort to work toward a mental health system that truly empowers those it serves. Central to this effort is using anthropological methods to understand the experiences of people with serious mental illness (SMI), and of the individuals directly involved in their lives. The latter includes the family members, who struggle to meet society's expectations of them as parents and siblings while simultaneously dealing wi…
