  • A Record of Late-Quaternary Moisture-Balance Change and Vegetation Response from the White Mountains, New Hampshire

Bryan Shuman, Bryan N Shuman et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•2005•References: 31

Changes in regional moisture availability over time affect hydrologic systems, such as lakes, and ecological processes, such as plant growth and reproduction. Long-term changes in moisture balance may help to explain broadscale changes in forest composition during the Quaternary period. In this article, Holocene lake-level changes and fossil pollen from Echo Lake, New Hampshire, are documented and the relationship between moisture-balance fluctua…

  • Late‐quaternary Vegetation Dynamics in North America

    Open Access•John W Williams, Bryan N Shuman et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Monographs•2004

This paper integrates recent efforts to map the distribution of biomes for the late Quaternary with the detailed evidence that plant species have responded individualistically to climate change at millennial timescales. Using a fossil‐pollen data set of over 700 sites, we review late‐Quaternary vegetation history in northern and eastern North America across levels of ecological organization from individual taxa to biomes, and apply the insights g…

  • Late Quaternary Water-Level Variations and Vegetation History at Crooked Pond, Southeastern Massachusetts

    Open Access•Bryan Shuman, Bryan N Shuman et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2001

Sediment cores collected along a transect in Crooked Pond, southeastern Massachusetts, provide evidence of water-level changes between 15,000 cal yr B.P. and present. The extent of fine-grained, detrital, organic accumulation in the basin, inferred from sediment and pollen stratigraphies, varied over time and indicates low water levels between 11,200 and 8000 cal yr B.P. and from ca. 5300 to 3200 cal yr B.P. This history is consistent with the pa…

  • Years of Sediment, Vegetation, and Water-Level Changes at the Makepeace Cedar Swamp, Southeastern Massachusetts

    Open Access•Paige Newby, Paige E Newby et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2000

Data from a transect of four cores collected in the Makepeace Cedar Swamp, near Carver, Massachusetts, record past changes in deposition, vegetation, and water level. Time series of palynological data provide a 14,000-yr record of regional and local vegetation development, a means for biostratigraphic correlation and dating, and information about changes in water level. Differences in records among cores in the basin show that water level decreas…

  • Present‐day and mid‐Holocene biomes reconstructed from pollen and plant macrofossil data from the former Soviet Union and Mongolia

Open Access•Pavel E Tarasov, Thompson Webb Iii et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biogeography•1998

Fossil pollen data supplemented by tree macrofossil records were used to reconstruct the vegetation of the Former Soviet Union and Mongolia at 6000 years. Pollen spectra were assigned to biomes using the plant‐functional‐type method developed by Prentice et al . (1996). Surface pollen data and a modern vegetation map provided a test of the method. This is the first time such a broad‐scale vegetation reconstruction for the greater part of northern…

  • Radiocarbon-Dated Pollen and Sediment Records From Near the Boylston Street Fishweir Site in Boston, Massachusetts

    Open Access•Paige Newby, Paige E Newby et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1994

A radiocarbon-dated pollen record near the Boylston Street Fishweir site in Boston; Massachusetts, provides a regional and local record of vegetation changes from the middle Holocene to present. The stratigraphy begins about 5630 ± 90 yr B.P. with a marine transgression and is continuous up to the historic backfilling of the Back Bay area about 100 yr B.P. When pollen began accumulating at the site, the immediate area resembled the swamp forests …

  • Pollen Response-Surface Estimates of Late-Quaternary Changes in the Moisture Balance of the Northeastern United States

    Open Access•Robert S Webb, Katherine H Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1993

Quantitative estimates of late-Quaternary climate in the northeastern United States are reconstructed from fossil pollen data to evaluate changes in the regional moisture balance inferred from water-level fluctuations. We use environmental response surfaces to calibrate modern pollen data (for 17 different taxa) to an index of effective soil moisture and mean annual precipitation. We apply these response surfaces to fossil pollen data from 60 sit…

  • Rates of Sediment Accumulation in Pollen Cores from Small Lakes and Mires of Eastern North America

    Open Access•Robert Stabler Webb, Thompson Webb•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1988

Data from 291 small lakes and mires in eastern North America provide information on the natural variability of rates of sediment accumulation in these environments over the last 18,000 yr. Accumulation rates were calculated by linear interpolation between radiocarbon and biostratigraphic dates from sediment cores taken for pollen analysis. Within the data set, the rates were lognormally distributed with a mean accumulation rate of 91 cm/10 3 yr, …

  • Changing Patterns in the Holocene Pollen Record of Northeastern North America

    Open Access•J Christopher Bernabo, Thompson Webb•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1977

By mapping the data from 62 radiocarbon-dated pollen diagrams, this paper illustrates the Holocene history of four major vegetational regions in northeastern North America. Isopoll maps, difference maps, and isochrone maps are used in order to examine the changing patterns within the data set and to study broad-scale and long-term vegetational dynamics. Isopoll maps show the distributions of spruce ( Picea ), pine ( Pinus ), oak ( Quercus ), herb…

  • The Contemporary Distribution of Pollen in Eastern North America

    Open Access•Ronald B Davis, Thompson Webb•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1975

By mapping and summarizing 478 pollen counts from surface samples at 406 locations in eastern North America, this study documents the relationships between the distributions of pollen and vegetation on a continental scale. The most common pollen types in this region are pine, birch, oak, and spruce. Maps showing isopercentage contours or isopolls for 13 important pollen types reflect the general N-S zonation of the vegetation. The maps and tabula…

  • Late- and Postglacial Climatic Change in the Northern Midwest, USA

    Open Access•Thompson Webb, Reid A Bryson•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1972

Canonical correlation analysis provides a means of reconstructing quantitative time series of past climatic variables during the last 15,000 years from fossil pollen spectra collected at three sites in the northern Midwest. This multivariate statistical technique was applied to a spatial array of modern pollen and climatic data in order to derive a set of mathematical transfer functions. These transform the fossil pollen spectra directly into qua…
