Daniel López Gómez, Israel Rodríguez-Giralt et al.•ARTICLE•Information Communication & Society•2024

This paper explores the dynamics of peer support and companionship among older adults on a social networking site during the COVID-19 lockdown. Drawing from the authors’ five-month experience as volunteer facilitators and a qualitative study involving users, social workers, and managers, the paper examines two modes of online peer support and companionship: one based on voice messages, the other on visual messages. Guided by critical media and da…

  • Essential Workers Balancing Life and Work during the Covid-19 Syndemic in Spain

    Open Access•Catuxa Máiz-Mazuela, Laura Medina-Perucha et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Social Care in the…•2023

Rationale. During the COVID-19 lockdown in Spain, healthcare workers have experienced productive work overload, as well as an increase in reproductive work, which has worsened their mental health. Little research has been done on nonhealthcare essential workers although they have been exposed to similar conditions. Objective. To explore the experiences of essential workers after the first year of the COVID-19 syndemic in Spain on work-life balanc…

  • Children and Young People’s Participation in Disaster Risk Reduction

Open Access•Maggie Mort, Israel Rodríguez-Giralt et al.•BOOK•Children and Young People's…•2020

Available Open Access under CC-BY-NC licence. Disasters are complex environmental, social and cultural events and processes yet disaster management approaches tend to simplify responses and homogenise affected populations. Participatory research with more than 550 children across Europe, detailed in this book argues for a radical transformation in children’s roles in disasters. It shows how more child-centred working in civil protection and emerg…

  • Reassembling Activism, Activating Assemblages

    Israel Rodríguez-Giralt, Isaac Marrero-Guillamón et al.•BOOK•Reassembling Activism, Activating…•2020

  • Down to earth social movements

Bruno Latour, Denise Milstein et al.•CHAPTER•Reassembling Activism, Activating…•2020•Cited by: 8•References: 2

Taking his most recent publications on ways to engage with the planet as a point of departure, this conversation with Bruno Latour considers some of the political and conceptual challenges associated with what he calls the New Climate Regime. Latour discusses the need for breaking with the modernist framework that set the stage for the environmental crisis in the first place, and which has also hindered the capacity of social movements to affect …

  • Reassembling activism, activating assemblages

    Israel Rodríguez-Giralt, Israel Rodríguez‐Giralt et al.•ARTICLE•Social movement studies•2018•Cited by: 6•References: 60

This introductory essay conceptually situates the dialogue between Actor–Network Theory (ANT) and Social Movement Studies that this special issue aims to foster. Rather than considering ANT as a theory in the classic sense, we define it as a theoretical sensibility open to permanently redrawing its own shape in response to the relational entanglements it studies. ANT and its sibling, assemblage theory, have allowed scholars to attend to the compl…

  • Healing, knowing, enduring

    Open Access•M Tironi, Israel Rodríguez-Giralt et al.•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•2017•Cited by: 34•References: 22

How can politics be articulated or at least imagined by ill, impoverished and abandoned communities? This article documents how care is invoked by activist groups and local citizens in their search for ethical recognition and environmental justice in Puchuncaví, Chile. The authors argue that in a context of prolonged and systematic harm, care emerges as a way to render their suffering understandable, knowable and actionable, and thus as a mode of…

  • Disasters as Meshworks

    Open Access•Israel Rodríguez-Giralt, Israel Rodríguez‐Giralt et al.•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 32

The aim of this article is to revisit disasters as materially enlivened events. The sociology of disasters has usually rested upon two assumptions. First, that disasters are phenomena circumscribed in time and space. They are geographically situated and time-specific, thus their effects can be controlled and compared. And second, that the main actors involved in disasters are humans and institutions, the basic units of sociological research and t…
