‘Art as social practice: Language and marginality’: Special Issue of Applied Linguistics Review
The present collection of articles draws on the anthropological concept of art of the ordinary from Raymond Williams' book Culture is Ordinary (1989).In this sense, art is like culture, both in terms of the meanings shared by society and in terms of those new ones that are created and tested. Therefore, art is integral to 'the process of discovery and creative effort' (1989: 93) of a culture. The notion of ordinary art is combined with that of a so…
Reinventing the self through participatory art: Writing and performing among rough sleepers
Cupchik (2013. ‘I am, therefore I think, act, and express both in life and in art’) claims that being is associated with artistic expressions of various kinds. In line with this notion, the present paper reports on a socially engaged art project that involved the clients at a day centre for people experiencing homelessness. For nearly four months, the participants met once a week for a few hours under the direction of a facilitator and a film-mak…
Aspirational identities and desire through discourses of productivity in marginal individuals: A case study of three women
This article investigates how marginal individuals construct a productive self in an interview. It reports on a case study of three women-a squatter, a rough sleeper, and an Irish Traveller-who inhabit uncertain and threatened homes. In response to dominant discourses of productivity, in the interviews the speakers' talk reflects the desire to be perceived as able and knowledgeable individuals. Thus, rejecting their marginal subjectivities, the t…
Exploring (Im)mobilities: Language Practices, Discourses and Imaginaries
The chapters in this volume use ethnographically-based methodologies to address the interconnectedness between forms of mobility and immobility in international migratory processes or in discriminatory practices within the boundaries of national states, thus bringing to light a sociolinguistics responsive to 21st century concerns.
Gypsy and Traveller Girls. Silence, Agency and Power
As its author proudly proclaims, Gypsy and Traveller Girls is the first book to give voice to the children of itinerant communities in Scotland (p. 2) and, more importantly, their 'gendered educational experiences ' (p. 75). While research exists on GRT (as Gypsies, Roma, and Travellers are officially referred to in the UK) who live in England, Wales and Ireland, no gender studies have ever been carried out on these groups in Scotland. The ethnog…
Discourses of Identity in Liminal Places and Spaces
With and without Zanzibar: Liminal diaspora voices and the memory of the revolution
This paper explores discursive narratives as inextricably linked to the construction of identity, place and history by a number of interviewed individuals. From an interactional sociolinguistics (cf. De Fina & Georgakopoulou, 2012 ) perspective, the study explores the context of the East African diaspora ( Georgiou, 2006 ; Manger & Assal, 2006 among many others) as the interviewed participants are all Zanzibar-born individuals for whom the relati…
A pragmatic cognitive model for the interpretation of verbal–visual communication in television news programmes
The combination of the verbal and the visual track in television news discourse poses a considerable analytical challenge. In the viewers’ minds the co-habitation of these two semiotic channels triggers a complex network of inferential processes, based on expectations of coherence and relevance, with which they make sense of the representation of the world offered in the news. Through the analysis of a number of news items, this article considers…
When cinema borrows from stage: Theatrical artifice through indexical explicitness in The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover and Dogville
Framed within the debate on the different nature of theatrical and filmic communication, the study considers two avant-garde films by Greenaway, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, and von Trier, Dogville, as examples of texts that travel from one medium to another and show closeness to the theatre. This is revealed not solely through the artificiality and the enclosure of the setting and the mise-en-scène, but also at the level of the d…

Values and choices in television discourse. A view from both sides of the screen: A View from Both Sides of the Screen
Discourse and media scholars who study television often focus on the way this medium constructs its messages linguistically and semiotically by words, images, sounds, camera movements and in general by making specific choices that appear to reflect cultural values and ideologies. At the same time, television is a very complex medium whose products are the result of a cooperative effort and are generally created under a number of practical constra…
Argumentation in discourse and grammar: 2015 Installment
This chapter explores the intersection of argumentation theory and discourse analysis, examining how argumentation structures are manifested in grammar and discourse. It argues that argumentation is not merely a rhetorical device but a fundamental aspect of language use, shaping how we construct meaning and interact with others. The authors analyze various discourse phenomena, including connectives, modality, and evidentials, demonstrating how th…
‘… Might go to Birmingham, Leeds … up round there, Manchester … and then we always come back here …’: The conceptualisation of place among a group of Irish women travellers
This study of a group of Irish women travellers in the South of England provides the opportunity for a discourse of situated self-identity within a mobilities paradigm. The stability-aspiring travellers’ community, to which the women in the study belong, invites a reflection on existing approaches to place-identity in that these women conceptualise their place in terms of its positive affordances and services that make their life liveable. The fi…

Toward a definition and classification of human interest narratives in television war reporting
The representation of conflict in the discourse of Italian melodrama
Features of the authorial voice-over in La terra trema
Visconti's film The Earth Trembles is a homage to the ideology of the Italian post-war left. The paper proposes a linguistic analysis of the denarratising techniques that the neorealist director used for the voice-over comment of that film to create the impression of a narrative occurring not once but several times. The notion of the pseudo-narrative explored by Henderson (1983) and Kinder (1989) is applied
