  • Life as Performance

    Open Access•Brian Mccormack•ARTICLE•interconnections journal of…•2021•References: 9

In this article I draw on Jakob von Uexküll and a number of thinkers who engage, extend or otherwise resonate with his work to argue for a theory of meaning as dynamic process. Uexküll enables a view of meaning as something an embodied subject does rather than something possessed or accessed. The ongoing life of an organism – relations to self, to environment, to past experience and to anticipated future events – forms an experiential context wit…

  • Narrative, Meaning, and Multispecies Ethical Ontologies

    Open Access•Brian Mccormack•ARTICLE•Humanimalia•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 6

In this essay, I draw out and develop some key points of connection and overlap between Val Plumwood's dialogical ethical ontology and Jakob von Uexküll's Umwelt theory. Plumwood makes a convincing case for extending a form of narrative subjectivity beyond the human. Uexküll's theoretical biology has been employed in efforts to build on Plumwood's work (by van Dooren and Rose for example), yet such an ethical strategy raises difficult questions o…

  • The Poverty of Globalization

    Open Access•Brian Mccormack•ARTICLE•International Studies Review•2007•References: 2

Globalization and Its Enemies. By Daniel Cohen. Translated by Jessica B. Baker Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 2006. 192 pp., $27.95 (ISBN: 0-262-03350-X). In Globalization and Its Enemies , Daniel Cohen challenges his readers to consider globalization not only for its real and perceived harmful effects, but also—and perhaps more importantly—for its promise of prosperity, which the enemies of globalization either oppose on cultural grounds or do not re…

  • Uncovering the Source of International Order

    Open Access•Brian Mccormack•ARTICLE•International Studies Review•2005•References: 3

Ordering International Politics by Janice Bially Mattern is a superbly crafted piece of scholarship. Its greatest asset is Bially Mattern's ability to speak across a variety of theoretical approaches in ways that are methodologically and philosophically important. In Ordering International Politics, she manages to merge realism and constructivism in a postconstructivist “identity turn” that places identity and language at the center of both under…

  • Postcolonialism in an Age of Globalization

    Open Access•Brian Mccormack•ARTICLE•Alternatives Global Local Political•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The point of theory, it seems, is to attempt to stop time, perhaps as if it was a dependent variable, and assemble the disparate elements of understanding into statements, or even a statement--or even a single word--that theorists would hope would capture the movement of the moment. Today, at this moment of global movement, we are assembled to reflect on our currency with and for one another. Many of us have attempted to stake a claim to having a…

  • Fifty Years of Indonesian Development

    Open Access•Brian Mccormack•ARTICLE•Journal of World-Systems Research•1999•Cited by: 1•References: 9

In Indonesia much uncertainty remains in the wake of the dramatic changes that unfolded in the latter half of the l990's. By the end of the 20th century, the Indonesian economy was in ruins. The concept of democracy remained contested. The transportation and communication system that once at least minimally linked the diverse and at times disparate areas and peoples of the Indonesian archipelago into an Andersonian imagined national community col…

  • Three Clowns of Ethnography

    Open Access•Brian Mccormack•ARTICLE•Dialectical Anthropology•1999

  • Analysis of Potential Energy Surfaces of Multimachine Power Systems Using Computer Graphics

Open Access•Vijay Vittal, Sankaran Rajagopal et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•1986

This paper reports on undergraduate student involvement in a research project at Iowa State University. The undergraduate project used computer graphics as a tool to investigate the shape of the potential energy surfaces for a multimachine power system. The over-all research project is concerned with the application of the Transient Energy Function (TEF) method in direct transient stability analysis of power systems. The computer graphics used in…
