A Computational Model for Assessing the Population Health Impact of Introducing a Modified Risk Claim on an Existing Smokeless Tobacco Product
Computational models are valuable tools for predicting the population effects prior to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorization of a modified risk claim on a tobacco product. We have developed and validated a population model using best modeling practices. Our model consists of a Markov compartmental model based on cohorts starting at a defined age and followed up to a specific age accounting for 29 tobacco-use states based on a cohort me…

Evaluation of thresholds for power mean-based and other divisor methods of apportionment

Reputation, Compliance, and International Law
Increasingly skeptical about the efficiency and effectiveness of formal multilateral enforcement mechanisms, a growing number of international relations theorists and international lawyers have begun to argue that states’ reputational concerns are actually the principal mechanism for maintaining a high level of treaty compliance. This essay argues that there are a number of empirical and theoretical reasons for believing that the actual effects o…
Single-Peakedness and Disconnected Coalitions
Ordinally single-peaked preferences are distinguished from cardinally single-peaked preferences, in which all players have a similar perception of distances in some one-dimensional ordering. While ordinal single-peakedness can lead to disconnected coalitions that have a ‘hole’ in the ordering, cardinal single-peakedness precludes this possibility, based on two models of coalition formation: • Fallback (FB): Players seek coalition partners by desc…

Development and Validation of the Impulse Buying Tendency Scale
Previous research suggests that individuals vary in their proclivity to purchase products on impulse. This paper presents the results of four studies (Study 1, n = 212; Study 2, n = 152; Study 3, n = 124; and Study 4, n = 550) designed to develop and validate the Impulse Buying Tendency Scale. Data from the first three studies indicate that the scale is unidimensional and internally consistent. The third study provides evidence supporting converg…

The British Experience under a Statute Prohibiting Unfair Dismissal
Statutory protection against unfair dismissal was introduced in Britain in 1971. This article examines the origin, nature, and effectiveness of that statute, which is enforced by publicly funded, tripartite tribunals. The authors show that only a minority of dismissed employees enter claims under the statute; only a minority of claimants win any relief; and only a minority of successful claimants win re-employment, most receiving instead relative…
Getting ‘tough’ with Wh - Movement
This paper is concerned with the analysis of sentences such as (1) in terms of the Wh - Movement transformation as proposed in Chomsky (1977: 102–110) and, in a revised form, in Chomsky (1981: 308–314): (1) John is easy to please
