The Stirrup and its Effect on Chinese Military History
Lynn white, in his medieval technology and social change, offers the interesting hypothesis that the feudal class of the European Middle Ages derived ultimately from the stirrup. The stirrups are generally oval in shape with a long, flat, rectangular handle at the top, to which a strap would be connected through a horizontal slot. The stirrups depicted in various contemporary Korean ceramic figures and murals are consistent with the shape that em…
The Disputation at Pengcheng: Accounts from the Wei shu and the Song shu
On the Name Shishuo xinyu
I came to Berkeley in 1949 to study with Professor Peter Boodberg. For someone embarking on a study of the Six Dynasties in the late 40s and early 50s of the last century, there was not much light to help one find one’s way, and there were any number of mysterious areas that beckoned but through which one made little headway. There was, for example, the matter of xuanxue 玄學 ,t he ‘‘Dark Learning,’’ which seemed to be an intriguing subject and of …
The Accession of Sima Yan, AD 265: Legitimation by Ritual Replication
Using what textual material can be found in the standard histories and in statements by later commentators, this paper traces the process by which the Sima family was able finally to replace the Wei state of the Three Kingdoms with their own Jin dynasty. It provides a close reading of these materials in the context of the Sima family's need to gain widespread support and to be seen as Wei's legitimate successors. The events of ad 239–65 may be us…

The Inventory Lists of Tomb 86TAM386 at Astana, Turfan
Access to the excavation report and a personal examination of the material recovered from Tomb 86TAM386 at Astana, Turfan, Xinjiang, permit an evaluation of the accuracy of the published report and of the transcription of recovered inventory lists (yiwushu). Attention is also paid to correlating the surviving objects with the inventories, and the possible symbolic significance of certain of the grave goods

A Brief Survey of Defensive Armor Across Asia
Scale armor had a long history in the Near East and was almost exclusively the armor of the steppeland nomads. While depictions of Scythians in art seldom show them wearing armor, extensive archaeological finds yield scale armor. The Sarmatians were famed for scale armor which covered their bodies and that of their horses. Scale armor reached its furthest level of development among the Parthian cataphracti. The armor included flexible ring armor …

Instructions for the Grave: The Case of Yan Zhitui

Elite Lineages and the T'O-Pa Accommodation: A Study of the Edict of 495
An examination of the scanty material directly bearing on social class in the state of Northern Wei in the late 5th century suggests that the system for delineating family status outlined in an edict of 495 was elitist rather than aristocratic and that its roots are to be found in Chinese society, not in the Hsien-pei tribal structure. The T'o-pa rulers may have instituted the system in order to systematize and bureaucratize social custom so as t…
