  • Lived Islam

    Open Access•A Kevin Reinhart, Andreas Reinhart•BOOK•Lived Islam•2020

Does Islam make people violent? Does Islam make people peaceful? In this book, A. Kevin Reinhart demonstrates that such questions are misleading, because they assume that Islam is a monolithic essence and that Muslims are made the way they are by this monolith. He argues that Islam, like all religions, is complex and thus best understood through analogy with language: Islam has dialects, a set of features shared with other versions of Islam. It a…

  • What We Know about Maʿrūf

Open Access•A Kevin Reinhart, Andreas Reinhart•ARTICLE•Journal of Islamic Ethics•2017

Conventionally, Qurʾānic ethics is derived from the Qurʾān and Prophetic ḥadīth , (along with certain rules of application) to form norms of moral conduct— sharīʿah . This paper argues that a study of the term maʿrūf , (meaning literally, “known”) which occurs in three contexts in the Qurʾān, suggests that the Qurʾān itself assumes that revelational knowledge is to be supplemented with conventional moral understandings of what is right and wrong.…

  • Arabic on the Macintosh

Open Access•A Kevin Reinhart, Andreas Reinhart•ARTICLE•Middle East Studies Association…•1992

The Golden age of printing for Islamicists surely was the 19th century, when skilled European and occasionally Middle Eastern and Indian typesetters, could compose in as many fonts as an author could write. One reads Goldziher’s Die Zāhiriten with envy, not only for the meticulous transliterated Arabic and generous footnotes at the bottom of the page, but for the extensive Arabic quotations inserted into the text and notes. Since few of the Arabi…

  • Manuscript Research in the Yemen [Arab Republic]

Open Access•A Kevin Reinhart, Andreas Reinhart•ARTICLE•Middle East Studies Association…•1980

The Yemen Arab Republic (San c a) is becoming day by day more accessible. Research conditions are changing weekly and the number of scholars working in the Yemen has increased dramatically. Accordingly, it seems that the very helpful article by Green and Stookey (MESA Bulletin VIII/3, 1974) needs to be expanded topically, as no single article can now detail all of the research possibilities and materials in the Yemen
