  • Expressing (distorted) dissent against the Party-state out of internalised racism on X

Open Access•Altman Yuzhu Peng, Chunyan Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Convergence The International…•2026

This article critically examines a troubling development in grassroots resistance to authoritarianism, which we term ‘distorted dissent’. Using the Great Translation Movement (GTM) as a case study, we explore how its coordinators mobilise affective claims to substantiate critiques of Chinese people’s national character, whilst leveraging X’s connective affordances to amplify their reach in the transnational digital sphere. Such affective claims s…

  • Manufacturing Racialised Misogyny in China’s Digital Manosphere

    Open Access•Altman Yuzhu Peng, Salma El Bourkadi et al.•ARTICLE•Communication & Sport•2026•References: 27

This article examines the consumption of WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) games within China’s sports fandom through a dual gender-racial lens, using celebrity basketball player Caitlin Clark as a case study. Drawing on a dialectical-relational approach to critical discourse studies, complemented by an intersectional lens on gender and racial injustices, we unpack how Chinese fans co-construct Clark as an ideal sportswoman on Hupu, …

  • Religious belief, subjective social status and residents’ happiness

    Open Access•Jindian Liu, Chunyan Wu•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2025

The specific impact of religious beliefs on residents’ happiness is estimated by gender, urban-rural status, health status, and regional distribution. Endogeneity is addressed through the use of instrumental variable and propensity score matching methods. A mediation effect model is employed to test the significance of…

  • Analysis of clinical characteristics and influencing factors of fever after electroconvulsive therapy

Open Access•Mengmeng Zhang, Rui Xu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

We found that fever after ECT requires attention in clinical practice. Although the direct impact of fever after ECT treatment is limited, given its potential risks, it is advised to focus on strengthening the temperature monitoring of high-risk groups

  • Long-term effects of health during childhood on depressive symptoms in later life

Open Access•Yinghui You, Zimo Wang et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Our findings suggest that childhood health may influence mental well-being in later life. Promoting healthy behaviors from early childhood could help reduce depression risk in older age. However, the reliance on self-reported data and a cross-sectional design limit causal interpretation. Preventive care and targeted interventions for vulnerable children should be prioritized to improve long-term mental health outcomes

  • Countering Nationalist Politics Through Distant Witnessing

    Open Access•Altman Yuzhu Peng, Yu Sun et al.•ARTICLE•Social Media + Society•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 36

Advancing an affective-discursive approach, this article examines how distant witnessing bolsters digital activist organizing that challenges a Southern authoritarian regime's nationalist politics on international social media. The research foregrounds an initiative coordinated by a group of overseas dissidents who sought to expose China's foreign policy regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine on X (Twitter). Amid ongoing battlefield stalemates…

  • Gender Fluidity Versus Homohysteria

This article investigates how young Chinese male fans interpret and engage with mediated athletic bromances, drawing from interviews with university students who follow sports games closely. The research uncovers complex dynamics wherein these fans contextually embrace and delegitimise the homoerotic aspects of mediated athletic bromances as they navigate their sports consumption. This phenomenon reflects the multifaceted experiences of young men…

  • Psychometric evaluation of the Chinese version of the fear of pregnancy scale

Open Access•Chunyan Wu, Jian Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Introduction: Many women experience fear toward pregnancy, which can impact their desire to have children and the national birth rate. Thus, assessing women's fear of pregnancy is of great importance. However, there is currently no specialized tool for assessing women's fear of pregnancy in China. The purpose of this study is to translate the Fear of Pregnancy Scale into Chinese and test its reliability and validity among women of childbearing ag…

This article foregrounds the great translation movement (GTM), initially mobilised on X (formerly Twitter) in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as an example of activist journalism countering China's 'mainstream' narrative of the war and its broader implications. Using Fairclough’s dialectical-relational approach, adapted to the specifics of social media communication, we examine GTM postings throughout the first calendar year of the w…

We use the most popular Chinese-language sports fandom platform, Hupu, as the data repository and scrutinise the threads of male Hupu users’ postings about two elite sportswomen at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as the case studies. Drawing on feminist critical discourse analysis (FCDA), we elucidate the discursive …

  • Effects of vegetation restoration on soil nutrients, plant diversity, and its spatiotemporal heterogeneity in a desert–oasis ecotone

Open Access•Chunyan Wu, Lei Deng et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2021

Vegetation restoration has been proposed as an effective measure for rehabilitating degraded land and slowing desertification in arid regions. However, the spatial variation in soil quality and plant diversity following vegetation restoration remains unclear. This study was designed to explore soil nutrient dynamics and how soil nutrients affect plant diversity and spatial heterogeneity after shrub restoration. We assessed the effect of Haloxylon…

It examines the frames chosen by the press and the influence of the sources (especially external journalistic influence) reflected on the frame…
