The Western Inscription and the Eastern Inscription are two important texts that have followed distinct trajectories in the history of Chinese thought. While the former gained significant recognition shortly after its author’s death, the latter was almost forgotten until its rediscovery during the Ming dynasty. Nevertheless, both texts must be understood as complementary parts of a single path toward wisdom. In this collaboration, I present the c…
Dao in Transition: Comparative Reflections on Laozi's Italian Translations in the Interwar Period
The development of Daoism in Italy is deeply connected to how its classical texts were received and circulated. Although Italian Christian missionaries were among the earliest Western commentators on Daoism, significant Italian engagement with Daoist works only emerged in the 20th century. During the first half of that century, Italian publishers released six translations of the Laozi, three partial translations of the Zhuangzi, and several gener…
Looking for the Universal and Personal Dao: A Latam Reading of the Laozi
The Latam's Laozi: The Reception and Interpretations of the Laozi in Latin America
The Laozi has a long and variegated exegetical history inside and outside of China. This history shows the flexibility of a text that is always able to transform and adapt to the specific cultural context and historical period in which it emerges. Due to the expansion of Orientalism among Latin American intellectuals at the beginning of the 20th century, the Laozi, among other texts, began to propagate, producing a series of translations and orig…
Negotiating with the tradition: Representations of fish in Alai’s fictional writing
Tibet has long been orientalized in fictional representations. Taking as a case study two texts by Alai, this paper investigates how a traditional Tibetan cultural trait–the fish taboo–is mobilized to complicate the representation of Tibetan culture. By describing the fish taboo Alai points at Tibet's cultural specificity, which in virtue of its exoticism can catch the attention of non-Tibetan readers. At the same time, however, Alai equips his c…
