Impacts of a minimum pricing policy on high fat, sugar and sodium (HFSS) foods
Foods high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) are detrimental to people's health, social well-being and the environment. Minimum unit pricing has shown potential to reduce cigarette and alcohol consumption, but it is unpopular in the food and drinks sectors. This research aims to simulate the shadow price or minimum price for HFSS that could potentially reduce demand by 10 %, and estimate the impacts on nutrition, climate and economic welfare in Scotl…
Demand for fish in Great Britain is driven by household income and taste
Objective: Fish is high in nutrients that provide a range of health benefits, but people in Great Britain only consume around half the amount that is recommended. This study analysed the demand for fish for consumption at home across different household groups in Great Britain. Design: Using a Rotterdam demand model, price and income elasticities were estimated for eleven fish groups across seven household groups. To investigate changes in fish d…
Effectiveness of a minimum pricing policy for the consumption of soft drinks in Mexico
The government of Mexico introduced the sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax and energy-dense tax in 2014 to help addressing the overweight and obesity problem. The literature suggests that the tax has led to a 4–10% reduction in SSB consumption. However, noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes and ischemic heart disease are still the leading causes of death in Mexico, accounting for approximately 59% of deaths in 2021. In other sectors, such as …
Food Expensiveness in Scotland's Remote Areas
The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether consumers in Scotland's remote areas suffer from food prices that are higher than the average national prices (i.e., whether a 'remoteness premium' exists). The question has been raised by several organizations in those communities looking at the high prices in local stores. This paper provides a new perspective using actual purchasing prices of a sample of 5,252 households in Scotland for 2017 …

Industry levy versus banning promotion on soft drinks in Scotland
In 2018, Public Health England and the UK House of Parliament introduced a soft drinks industry levy to reduce the amount of sugar in sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). In addition to the positive results coming from the levy, in January 2019 the UK Government opened a consultation to consider regulating the use of price promotions on foods high in fat, sugar, and salt content. The levy and the banning of promotions could have similar effects (i.e…
Introduction of New Food Products in China
The Chinese society has undergone an important transformation in the last 20 years, with changes in lifestyles due to increasing urbanization and rising income levels. The emergence of modern supermarkets, convenience stores, and hypermarkets has run alongside the changes in consumers’ lifestyles, revolutionizing the Chinese food system and the nature of its food supply. Changes in food consumption patterns have also accompanied these shifts. One…
Measuring the Degree of Integration in the Dairy Products Market in Malawi
Using monthly data for the period 2006–2011, this study analyzed the degree of spatial market integration in Malawi focusing on two dairy products (liquid milk and powdered milk) sold in the four major towns of the country. The analysis of spatial market integration is important to assess whether to re-establish a dairy processing facility in the northern part of the country. The empirical analysis comprised of the following steps: (1) Integratio…

The Impact of EU Export Refunds on the African Continent
The EU’s export refund policy has long been a source of controversy for its perceived impacts on third country markets. However, the EU Commission maintain that these concerns are largely historic as CAP reforms mean that export refunds are now used infrequently. The purpose of this article is therefore to assess the impacts of refunds in the wake of the 2003 reform of the CAP using two complementary analyses: first, an analysis using a computabl…

Local Food Activity in Scotland
Watts D., Leat P. and Revoredo-Giha C. Local food activity in Scotland: empirical evidence and research agenda, Regional Studies. This paper examines the geography of local food activity in Scotland and combines its data with published figures for England and Wales to calculate an index of food relocalization for Great Britain. It finds that non-farm-based local food enterprises tend to concentrate in Scotland's remotest and least densely populat…
