Union Democracy
This paper, written partly in response to Steven Ashby’s article for this journal, ‘Union Democracy in Today’s Labor Movement’, explores the meaning and practice of internal trade union democracy in Europe. Agreeing with many of Ashby’s arguments around the importance and desirability of union democracy, I consider the definition of union democracy, and the question of whether and why it matters. I then present some of the main dimensions of the …
(How) can international trade union organisations be democratic
International trade union organisations, like unions at national level, commonly affirm their commitment to internal democracy. But what does this mean? There exists a vast literature on union democracy, addressing the questions whether democracy in trade unions is desirable; whether it is possible; and if so, how it can be achieved. However, the focus of analysis is almost exclusively at the national (or sub-national) level, with the premise tha…
In search of global labour markets
In this introductory article, the Guest Editors consider key themes involved in discussion of cross-border labour migration, exploring the ambiguities of some of the main concepts involved. They summarise the six substantive articles which follow, and identify some major topics for further research
What about the workers? The implications of Brexit for British and European labour
In June 2016, a small majority of voters called for Britain to leave the EU. In this article, we discuss the referendum itself and the form which Brexit may take. It has become clear that the current UK government is committed to a ‘hard’ Brexit which will rupture most existing ties with the EU. While much uncertainty remains, there are alarming indications that ‘regaining sovereignty’ – a key slogan of the Brexit campaign – will translate into a…
Trade Unions in Western Europe
This title examines trade unions in ten European countries Britain, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy. It explores their historical evolution, the current challenges which they face such as membership loss and a weakening of collective bargaining, and their response to these challenges.
European trade unions
We must first thank the Editor for arranging this Symposium, and Roland Erne, Guglielmo Meardi and Ida Regalia for their kind though perceptive commentaries. They say little with which we would want to disagree, but on a number of points we try to clarify what we were (and were not) attempting to do when we wrote the book, and to address some issues in comparative research on trade unionism where the reviewers themselves clearly adopt different p…
Works Councils
This article focuses on works councils, adopting the definition of Rogers and Streeck. It is concerned with countries with generalized systems of representation – where participation structures exist largely independently of management wishes – and not with those where representative bodies may be established voluntarily through localized management initiatives. The article also limits attention to bodies with the capacity to discuss a broad agen…
Labour and the global financial crisis
At the 21st SASE Conference in Paris, in July 2009, a group of political economy and industrial relations scholars discussed whether the current legitimation crisis of financial capitalism could be viewed as a turning point for labour internationally. Following are an introduction by the panel organizer, Lucio Baccaro, and revised versions of presentations by Robert Boyer, Colin Crouch, Marino Regini, Paul Marginson, Richard Hyman and Rebecca Gum…
