  • A multi-modal approach towards mining social media data during natural disasters - A case study of Hurricane Irma

Open Access•Somya D Mohanty, Brown Biggers et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2021

  • Strengthening community-level understanding of and responses to intimate partner violence using geographic information systems (GIS)

    Open Access•Christine E Murray, Rick Bunch et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aggression Conflict…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Purpose – Recently, there has been increased attention to community- and neighborhood-level influences on rates and experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV). The purpose of this paper is to describe the use of geographic information systems (GIS) to geographically analyze these influences in order to enhance community-level understanding of and responses to IPV. Design/methodology/approach – The authors review existing literature supporting…

  • A Comparative Analysis of Indian Gaming in the United States

    William V Ackerman, William V Ackerman William V Ackerman et al.•ARTICLE•The American Indian Quarterly•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 3

A Comparative Analysis of Indian Gaming in the United States William V. Ackerman (bio) and Rick L. Bunch (bio) The United States has witnessed a dramatic increase in legal gaming on Indian reservations since the 1987 landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court in California v. Cabazon Band of Mission Indians.1 Currently there are 240 Indian tribes operating more than 400 casinos and bingo halls in 28 states. Total gaming revenues reached…

  • Learning Geographic Information from a Map and Text

Robert Lloyd, Robert Earl Lloyd et al.•ARTICLE•Cartographica The International…•2010

A map is frequently combined with a text to provide spatial and non-spatial information for learners. How a map and a text are combined and the characteristics of learners are keys for understanding successful learning. This study used a cognitive experiment to investigate spatial learning by explaining performance on a test of acquired knowledge with variables related to the learning environment and to individual differences of learners. Results…

  • Anti-Americanism, Political Cartoons, and a Socio-Geographic Imagination

    Open Access•Mark Long, Rick Bunch et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Inquiry•2010•References: 3

This research note synopsizes previous studies to present future directions for the measurement of anti-Americanism within the United States and comparatively. We explain new vectors in our research design and posit new hypotheses for future research. The note highlights the importance of cross-national investigation of anti-Americanism, and suggests some methodological considerations in that endeavor

  • Explaining Map-reading Performance Efficiency

Robert Lloyd, Rick Bunch•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2008•Cited by: 1

This paper explains the performance of a map-reading task that required subjects to locate a state on a map of the United States after being given the state's name. Response times and accuracy were hypothesized to be a function of differences among the decision makers and among the states. The cognitive science literature suggests that variation in performance can be explained by the interaction of biological and environmental variables. Individu…

  • Individual Differences in Map Reading Spatial Abilities Using Perceptual and Memory Processes

    Robert Lloyd, Rick Bunch•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Central to spatial intelligence are the capacities to perceive the visual world accurately, to perform transformations and modifications upon one's initial perceptions, and to be able to re-create aspects of one's visual experiences, even in the absence of relevant physical stimulation. One can be asked to produce forms or simply to manipulate those that have been provided [Gardner 1983, p. 173]

  • Technology and Map-Learning

Robert Lloyd, Rick L Bunch et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•2003•References: 75

This article investigates the cognitive processes used by learners (adults and young adolescents) for tasks that require the integration of geographical information across spaces, hierarchies, and geographic scales. An experiment simulated basic GIS functions and contained four experimental conditions (Chunk, Layer, Scale, and Whole). Reaction time, accuracy, and confidence were recorded as dependent variables related to the success of the integr…
