Teacher practice under the structural challenges of academic second chance education
Academic second-chance education (SCE) provides young adults with the opportunity for upward mobility. However, many young people in academic SCE have unfavourable prerequisites, which make it difficult for them to meet academic requirements. In this article, we explore how teachers respond to this challenge in their practice and the extent to which teacher practice matches learner expectations. We look at formal academic SCE and the following as…
Pupils' knowledge of rules and its influence on rule-breaking behaviour in the classroom – A mixed methods study
This study explores pupils’ knowledge of rules and its connection with their behaviour during lessons. A mixed methods approach that includes standardised classroom observations conducted on 63 days in 22 first-year classes and qualitative interviews with 107 individual children is used. Qualitative analyses suggest that the majority of children know the rules specific to the classroom they are in and demonstrate how differentiated their knowledg…
Vulnerable agents
Research on children in transnational families benefits from a conceptual input as provided by the studies presented in this special issue. The input aims to overcome the usual juxtaposition of agency and vulnerability dominating the research field, a juxtaposition resulting from disciplinary preconceptions and not from empirical insights. In contrast, the results of the studies in this special issue clearly show that both agency and vulnerabilit…
Being Nice' as Modus Vivendi in Classrooms
This study of first-year primary school draws on Goffman's concept of 'collective behavior' to examine how order is established and disrupted through the mutual adjustment of all participants' actions. We employed a multi-method longitudinal design, using semi-standardized observations and qualitative interviews with teachers and children at three points during the year. We found that children contribute to the social order of the classroom by 'b…
Struggling for open awareness – Trajectories of violence against children from a sociological perspective
We focus the concept of “awareness context” to capture trajectories of violence against children. This sociological concept of knowledge goes beyond the concept of “disclosure”. It does not focus on the child's mere communication and thus the individuals’ being informed about a fact, but aims at the shared knowledge based on which the interaction takes place. The (asymmetrical) relationships between children and adults can prevent children from i…

Doing Adulthood While Returning to School
This article focuses on young people between 18 and around 30 in Germany returning to school after dropping out or finishing their education at a lower level than they are now striving for. The facilities they attend provide what is called a “second-chance education”; the possibility of upgrading their school-leaving certificate at a later stage. However, the curricula and school regulations of the secondary schools apply in these institutions. T…
Foundations of well-being in children’s and youth’s everyday lives in Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan
The contributions in this special section deal with growing up in two post-Soviet states – Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan. Each contribution has a different priority on the variety of forces that shape the wellbeing of children and youth as structured in the interaction between the efforts and abilities of their families, the state, as well as social and health policies in both national and cross-national contexts. In this special section, we understa…
Being a (Female) Child in Baku
What does it mean to be a (female) child in the city of Baku, Azerbaijan? How can we critically interpret the girls’ understandings of well-being considering different forms of compliance with unequal social orders? What conclusions may be drawn from understandings of well- being about the nature of welfare state structures and there-in children’s specific positioning? To answer this question, we conducted qualitative interviews with 13 girls dur…

When the Family Occupies the Future – Self-Processes and Well-Being of Kyrgyz Children and Young People
The paper focuses on the question of how young people in the post-Soviet country of Kyrgyzstan deal with the structural and cultural demands of a society characterized by strong obligations of intergenerational solidarity and the normative pattern of submission under the authority of elders. Based on three preponderantly qualitative empirical studies on kindergarten children, teenagers and young adults, young people’s commitment to that order is …

The gap between learners’ personal needs and institutional demands in second chance education in Germany
In Germany about half of the adult learners who start second chance education drop out before graduation. In this paper we aim to contribute to an explanation for this low success rate. We focus on the normative expectations of learners: What are their expectations concerning teachers’ attention to their personal abilities, teacher support and the recognition of their needs, and to what extent are these expectations met by teachers? Our main assu…

Childhood Socialization
The socialization perspective was almost the exclusive way to approach children in sociological theory and research up to the 1970s; it implied that childhood was a phase of transition to adulthood and conceived of children only as social actors‐in‐the‐becoming. However, Empirical research on situations of socialization which showed that such situations depend on the social competence of all participants led to revisions of this conception. There…
Invisible children? Professional bricolage in child protection
Young children in Kyrgyzstan
This article focuses on preschool children in Kyrgyzstan, a poor country of the former Soviet union. What are children's views on the relational order in this transition society, and what is their contribution to the reproduction or challenging of this order? The authors use and elaborate the theoretical concepts of 'agency' and 'collectivism-individualism' to develop age-appropriate research instruments and to interpret children's views. Data we…

Childhood as a resource and laboratory for the self-project
The biographies of individuals in today's societies are characterized by the need to exert effort and make decisions in planning one's life course. A 'self-project' has to be worked out both retrospectively and prospectively; childhood becomes important as a resource and a laboratory for the self-project. This empirical study analyses how the occupational choices of young people are connected with their occupational aspirations as a child. Childr…

Childhood Sociology in Ten Countries
This article gives an overview of the preceding set of reports on the global state of the art of the sociology of childhood in Australia, Brazil, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, the UK and the USA. Intensive sociological research on children has had a relatively short history, but in that time it has become an important contribution to the analysis of society. It has the capacity to serve as an x-ray or a magnifying gla…
Persisting Inequalities
This article analyses the central themes running through the collection of papers in this special issue of Childhood, which were all given as papers at the XVI Durban World Congress of Sociology, 23-29 July 2006. These themes encompass the ways in which global processes of social change combining modernity with tradition have become important for both the perception of childhood and for childrens real lives. They also include the ways in which th…
