  • The impact of US Government Stop Work Order on HIV epidemic trajectory in Zimbabwe

Open Access•Isaac Taramusi, John Stover et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

Zimbabwe is highly dependent on United States Government (USG) funding for the HIV Response, where 42% of the HIV expenditures in 2020 were financed by the USG and in 2023, PEPFAR invested more than $200 million to support HIV programmes. In late January 2025, the USG issued a “Stop Work Order,” suspending funding for international aid and development during a 90-day review period and this was expected to have a significant negative impact on the…

  • HIV incidence and prevalence projections for Zimbabwe

Isaac Taramusi, John Stover et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of AIDS Research•2025

Introduction : Understanding how HIV epidemics are likely to behave in the future is key to informing HIV response strategies in low-income countries. Up-to-date HIV epidemiological estimates are important for policy decision- making, but surveillance data can be out of date. This study compared forecasts from HIV epidemiological models. Methods : Five independent modelling groups (EMOD-HIV, Goals, HIV Synthesis, Optima and PopART-IBM) calibrated…

  • Contraception to women’s economic empowerment

    Open Access•Jocelyn E Finlay, Mariam Gulaid et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2025•Referencias: 14

The pathway linking contraceptive access and use to women's economic empowerment is explored in this narrative review. Contraception can have a direct effect on women's economic empowerment through supporting bodily autonomy, but the main way in which the pathway links is through fertility. Contraception impacts the timing, spacing, and number of births, and these elements of fertility each impact the process of women's economic empowerment. Thes…

  • A quantitative assessment of the consistency of projections from five mathematical models of the HIV epidemic in South Africa

Open Access•Haroon Moolla, Andrew Phillips et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

While models produced consistent estimates for several outputs, there are areas of variability that should be investigated. This is important if projections are to be used in subsequent cost-effectiveness studies

  • Estimating private sector out-of-pocket expenditures on family planning commodities in low-and-middle-income countries

Open Access•Michelle Weinberger, Nicole Bellows et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

INTRODUCTION: The role of the private sector in family planning (FP) is well studied; however, few efforts have been made to quantify the role of private out-of-pocket (OOP) expenditures on FP commodities across low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs). Calculating OOP expenditures is important to illuminate the magnitude of these contributions and to inform discussions on how financial burdens can be reduced. METHODS: Estimates of FP users and co…

  • Potential effects of disruption to HIV programmes in sub-Saharan Africa caused by Covid-19

Open Access•Britta L Jewell, Edinah Mudimu et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet HIV•2020

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic could lead to disruptions to provision of HIV services for people living with HIV and those at risk of acquiring HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, where UNAIDS estimated that more than two-thirds of the approximately 38 million people living with HIV resided in 2018. We aimed to predict the potential effects of such disruptions on HIV-related deaths and new infections in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: In this modelling st…

  • Does the political will exist to bring quality-assured and affordable drugs to low- and middle-income countries

Open Access•E J Beck, Sundhiya Mandalia et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2019

BACKGROUND: Increased coverage with antiretroviral therapy for people living with HIV in low- and middle-income countries has increased their life expectancy associated with non-HIV comorbidities and the need for quality-assured and affordable non-communicable diseases drugs . Funders are leaving many middle-income countries that will have to pay and provide quality-assured and affordable HIV and non-HIV drugs, including for non-communicable dise…

  • Demographic change and HIV epidemic projections to 2050 for adolescents and young people aged 15-24

Open Access•Aleya Khalifa, John Stover et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2019

While adolescents and young people living with HIV are living longer and ageing into adulthood, if current trends continue, the number of new HIV infections is not projected to decline fast enough to end AIDS as a health threat in this age group. Regional variations suggest that while progress in Eastern and Southern Africa could reduce the size of the epidemic by 2050, other regions exhibit slower rates of decline among adolescents and young peo…

  • Using Evidence to Drive Impact

Open Access•Michelle Weinberger, Jessica Williamson et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 84

When designing a family planning (FP) strategy, decision‐makers can choose from a wide range of interventions designed to expand access to and develop demand for FP. However, not all interventions will have the same impact on increasing modern contraceptive prevalence (mCP). Understanding the existing evidence is critical to planning successful and cost‐effective programs. The Impact Matrix is the first comprehensive summary of the impact of a fu…

  • Financing transformative health systems towards achievement of the health Sustainable Development Goals

Open Access•Kristen Stenberg, Karin Stenberg et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet Global Health•2017

BACKGROUND: The ambitious development agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires substantial investments across several sectors, including for SDG 3 (healthy lives and wellbeing). No estimates of the additional resources needed to strengthen comprehensive health service delivery towards the attainment of SDG 3 and universal health coverage in low-income and middle-income countries have been published. METHODS: We developed a fram…

  • Producing HIV estimates

Open Access•Mary Mahy, Tim Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2017

BACKGROUND: The development of global HIV estimates has been critical for understanding, advocating for and funding the HIV response. The process of generating HIV estimates has been cited as the gold standard for public health estimates. OBJECTIVE: This paper provides important lessons from an international scientific collaboration and provides a useful model for those producing public health estimates in other fields. DESIGN: Through the compil…

  • Impact of malaria interventions on child mortality in endemic African settings

Open Access•Eline L Korenromp, Eline Korenromp et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

Spectrum-Malaria complements LiST by extending the scope of malaria interventions, program packages and health outcomes that can be evaluated for policy making and strategic planning within and beyond the perspective of child survival

  • The effects of family planning and other factors on fertility, abortion, miscarriage, and stillbirths in the Spectrum model

    Open Access•John Stover, William Winfrey•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

The family planning module in Spectrum provides a useful framework to incorporate changes in contraceptive practices and pregnancy outcomes in the LiST calculations of mortality rates and deaths

  • Progress toward the Goals of FP2020

Open Access•John Stover, Emily Sonneveldt•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2017•Citada por: 4

At the 2012 London Summit on Family Planning, more than 100 national leaders, donors, NGOs, and civil society and private-sector representatives pledged a renewed commitment to family planning. That initiative, known as FP2020, seeks to revitalize the field of family planning by scaling up efforts to expand knowledge, access, use, and quality of family planning services. The commitment includes increased resources and new approaches for increasin…

  • Modelling the potential impact and cost of scaling-up male circumcision in resource poor settings

Nazarius Mbona Tumwesigye, Fred Wabwire‐mangen et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of AIDS Research•2013

This study modelled estimates of the cost and impact of male circumcision (MC) under different scenarios using the Decision Maker's Program Planning Tool on data from Uganda. Results showed that the number of new adult HIV infections could be reduced by 23 000 if MC could be increased from the current 25% to 80% by 2015. The incidence of HIV could be reduced by 0.2 percentage points over the same period. If a scale up programme is to meet a targe…

  • Linking high parity and maternal and child mortality

Open Access•Emily Sonneveldt, Willyanne Decormier Plosky et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

This study shows that coverage of key health interventions is lower for high parity children and the pattern is consistent across countries. This could be a partial explanation for the higher mortality rates associated with high parity. Actions to address this gap could help reduce the higher mortality experienced by high parity birth

  • Changes in the distribution of high-risk births associated with changes in contraceptive prevalence

Open Access•John Stover, John A Ro et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

The proportion of second and higher order births with demographic risk factors declines substantially as fertility declines. This creates a potential for reducing child mortality rates. Some of the reduction comes from modifying the birth interval distribution or by bringing maternal age at the time of birth into the 'safe' range of 18-35 years, and some comes from the actual elimination of births that would have a high mortality risk (high parit…

  • Revising the Proximate Determinants of Fertility Framework

    John Stover•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1998•Citada por: 20

The proximate determinants of fertility framework, developed in its current form by Bongaarts, has been used extensively by researchers for the past 20 years. Since the initial framework was developed, a wealth of new survey data on the proximate determinants has become available. This article reviews the new data and past experiences and suggests modifications to the framework that would take advantage of this experience. The major modifications…
