Reflections on Functions of Language
The year 1994 was an important year for us Belgian systemic-functional linguists. We hosted the 21st International Systemic-Functional Congress at the University of Ghent (August 1-5).And in that same year the first issue of Functions of Language saw the light. At some point we had found out through various meetings that SFL was practised at three universities in Flanders, i.e.Antwerp, Ghent and Leuven. In Antwerp Dirk Noël's research was inspired b…
Equivocation and doublespeak in far right-wing discourse
An analysis was conducted of the discourse of Nick Griffin (leader of the BNP, the far right-wing British National Party), as featured on a television debate, broadcast on the popular BBC current affairs program Question Time (22 October 2009). On the basis of equivocation theory (Bavelas et al. 1990), it was hypothesized that Griffin's discourse may be seen to reflect an underlying communicative conflict. On the one hand, to be seen as racist is…
Positive Appraisal” as a Core Meaning of well
This article unravels the complexity of the historical development of the pragmatic marker well. Using data from three historical corpora (Helsinki Corpus of English Texts, Corpus of Early English Correspondence and Corpus of English Dialogues) a detailed description is provided of the contextualised semantic-pragmatic meanings of well in different periods. The study shows how the use of well in specific contexts allowed the form to gradually ado…

Almost certainly and most definitely
Those Are Only Slogans
This article examines a newspaper and a television debate between a philosopher and two politicians of the extreme rightwing party the Flemish Bloc ( Vlaams Blok) in Flanders (Belgium). The debates took place in the summer and autumn of 2004, respectively, after the party had been condemned for racism by the Belgian court. The debates center around the fundamental question asked by the philosopher to what extent and in what way the party has aban…

The discourse particle well and its equivalents in Swedish and Dutch
The aim of the article is to make a contribution to the description of the meaning and functions of well by looking at its translations into Swedish and Dutch. In order to study well cross-linguistically we have used electronic translation corpora. Our account of well is based on Bakhtin's notion of heteroglossia as it is integrated within the systems of modality and evidentiality (White 1999, 2000). A comparison is made with earlier proposals by…
The functions of I think in political discourse
The expression I (don't) think has in recent years received a fair amount of attention from different viewpoints and in different linguistic frameworks. After a brief survey of the most important literature on the subject, this article examines the occurrence of I think in political discourse as compared with its use in informal conversation. On the basis of two samples of 100 instances each from casual conversations and radio political interview…

Carita Paradis. Degree Modifiers of Adjectives in Spoken British English
Modal (un)certainty in political discourse
Image-Building Through Modality
This paper looks at the way in which politicians use radio interviews to present an image of themselves as fully committed to their cause. In previous research the focus has been on strategies of evasion which are developed by interviewees in response to face-threatening questions. In this article I aim to complement the picture of the hedging politician by concentrating on the equally important linguistic devices employed for conveying intellect…
