Bone Mineral Density of Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) as a Potential Taphonomic Factor in Skeletal Part Attrition
Agents of taphonomy can bias skeletal parts and the frequency of bones in archaeological sites. An important factor to consider is the possible effect of bone density-mediated attrition on archaeornithological assemblages. We scanned willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) specimens using a Lunar iDXA and an enCcore small animal body add-on to develop a rank-order scheme based on the volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) of skeletal parts. Our result…
The use of keywords in archaeornithology literature
A keyword reflects the subject matter of a journal article that is chosen by its author(s). The selection of keywords by researchers in their works is crucial to disseminating knowledge, increasing publication citations, and advancing a science career. We examined keywords chosen in the titles and keyword sections of the archaeornithology literature generated by past meetings of the Bird Working Group (BWG), International Council for Archaeozoolo…
Effects of soil shrink-swell on bird bones: An experimental taphonomy pilot study
Identifying Regional Environmental and Sustainability Issues: Adoption of an Interdisciplinary Design Charrette Approach
Charrettes are a useful tool to facilitate stakeholder discussion and generate useful end products to address regional issues. To identify regional environmental and sustainability issues, we held a series of interdisciplinary charrettes with stakeholders that shared a similar concern toward protecting the region. Outcomes included distinguishing exemplary sites representative of the issues on a base map and developing initial action items to add…
Bone chemical composition changes in bird bones from laboratory exposure to saline lake conditions
Prehistoric and historical insights in avian zooarchaeology, taphonomy and ancient bird use
Taphonomic Study of Japanese Quail (Coturnix japonica) Bone Modification Resulting from the Burial and Feeding Behavior of the American Burying Beetle (Nicrophorus americanus)
Actualistic and observational studies of bird bone disarticulation, wear, and damage contribute to understanding the development of fossil assemblages and distinguishing non-cultural from cultural deposition. The American burying beetle (Nicrophorus americanus) is known for seeking small bird carcasses to lay eggs and provide food for its brooding larvae. In this study, we examine the resulting body parts of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) car…
