  • Distinguishing biogenic from geogenic anhydrites in ash

Open Access•Ilana Peters, Elisabetta Boaretto et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2026•References: 2

A white layer composed of anhydrite, a calcium sulfate mineral, was identified in an archaeological context within a cave near the Dead Sea, radiocarbon dated to the Iron Age period. Under ambient conditions, anhydrite typically hydrates to gypsum, rendering its retention a notably rare phenomenon in an archaeological setting. This prompted questions regarding both its preservation and origin. Certain plants, such as tamarisk, are known to produc…

  • The Development of Tin Bronze in the Southern Levant during the Bronze Age

Ilana Peters, Yotam Asscher et al.•ARTICLE•Atiqot•2025

The paper surveys the development of the use of tin bronze in the Southern Levant, outlining its emergence in the late Early Bronze Age until its eventual predominance in the Late Bronze Age. As there are no tin or arsenical copper sources in the region, the paper discusses the potential sources based on archaeological and textual evidence, including recent analytical data, reflecting a possible correlation between the changes in metal sources an…

  • Remains of Two Iron Age IIB–C(?) Updraft Pottery Kilns at the Foot of Tel Gamma (Tell Jemma)

Davida Eisenberg-Degen, Ilana Peters et al.•ARTICLE•Atiqot•2025

An excavation southwest of Tel Gamma exposed two Iron Age II updraft pottery kilns and a refuse pit. The eastern kiln was only partially preserved; its fill contained workshop debris and storage-jar wasters. The better-preserved western kiln retained an almost intact, elongated combustion chamber with two sets of mud-brick flues and evidence of periodic upkeep. An activity layer was identified between and around the kilns, from which a mixed Iron…

  • Mosaic Technology in the Armenian Chapel Birds Mosaic, Jerusalem

Open Access•Yotam Asscher, Giulia Ricci et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2024

Since the Hellenistic period, preparatory drawings known as sinopiae were employed as guidelines for mosaicists in creating mosaics. The sinopiae served as the basis for style and content, facilitating the placement of colored tesserae in the supporting mortar. The technology of the mosaic and pigments used reflect the capacity of the mosaic workshop and its master. This work explores a polychrome sinopia that was found under a Byzantine mosaic o…
