  • Palaeoenvironmental changes and human-environment interactions in the surroundings of La Silla del Papa, SW Spain

Dominik Brill, Simon Matthias May et al.•PREPRINT•2024

The surroundings of the Strait of Gibraltar in southern Iberia are well known as a crossroads for population movements, cultural exchange and trade from Late Prehistory to Modern Times. However, questions remain about how this historical development has impacted the environment. The settlement of La Silla del Papa, an important hillfort located in the Sierra de la Plata in southern Andalusia (Cádiz), and its territory represent an ideal location …

  • Seismic catastrophes in historical times in Arabia – Destruction of the city of Qalhat (Oman) in the 16th century

Open Access•Miklós Kázmér, Krzysztof Gaidzik et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2023

The Arabian Peninsula is surrounded by seismically highly active plate margins, while the interior seems to be free from destructive earthquakes. We report two historical earthquakes in Qalhat, Oman, >300 km from any plate boundary and provide archaeoseismological analysis of ruined buildings. The first quake hit the city in 1497 AD with an intensity VII at most; the community survived and damage was repaired. The second event caused total devast…

  • Comparing High Accuracy t-LiDAR and UAV-SfM Derived Point Clouds for Geomorphological Change Detection

Open Access•Simoni Alexiou, Georgios Deligiannakis et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2021

Analysis of two small semi-mountainous catchments in central Evia island, Greece, highlights the advantages of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) based change detection methods. We use point clouds derived by both methods in two sites (S1 & S2), to analyse the effects of a recent wildfire on soil erosion. Results indicate that topsoil’s movements in the order of a few centimetres, occurring within a few months, can…

  • Mid‐ to late Holocene environmental changes and human‐environment interactions in the surroundings of La Silla del Papa, SW Spain

Open Access•Simon Matthias May, Maike Norpoth et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 16

In southern Iberia, the surroundings of the Strait of Gibraltar are known as a crossroad for population movements, cultural exchanges, and trade from Late Prehistory to modern times. However, questions remain about the impact of this historical development on the environment. The settlement of La Silla del Papa, an important hillfort in southern Andalusia (Cádiz), was occupied during the entire Iron Age, replaced by the coastal town Baelo Claudia…

  • Unravelling the Holocene environmental history of south-western Iberia through a palynological study of Lake Medina sediments

    Open Access•Tabea Schröder, José Antonio López-Sáez et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2019•References: 23

Lake Medina is a small, shallow and endorheic salt lake sensitive to climate variation in south-western Spain, close to Cádiz in western Andalusia. It is located in an evaporitic and karstic environment, and a saline lake affected by highly seasonal precipitation and evaporation. Geochemical and mineralogical data of core CO1313 combined with a robust age model show variation that contributes to the understanding of palaeoenvironmental and palaeo…

  • The sedimentary and geomorphological imprint of the AD 365 tsunami on the coasts of southwestern Crete (Greece) – Examples from Sougia and Palaiochora

  • Hanging-wall colluvial cementation along active normal faults

Open Access•Jack Mason, Sascha Schneiderwind et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2017

Many active normal faults throughout the Aegean juxtapose footwall limestone against hanging-wall colluvium. In places, this colluvium becomes cemented and forms large hanging-wall lobes or sheets of varying thickness attached to the bedrock fault. Investigations at the Lastros Fault in eastern Crete allow us to define criteria to distinguish between cemented colluvium and fault cataclasite (tectonic breccia), which is often present at bedrock fa…

  • Site formation and chronology of the New Paleolithic Site Sima de Las Palomas de Teba, Southern Spain

Open Access•Martin Kehl, Christoph Burow et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

The newly identified Paleolithic site Sima de Las Palomas de Teba hosts an almost seven-m-thick sediment profile investigated here to elucidate the rock shelter's chronostratigraphy and formation processes. At its base, the sediment sequence contains rich archeological deposits recording intensive occupation by Neanderthals. Luminescence provides a terminus ante quem of 39.4 ± 2.6 ka or 44.9 ± 4.1 ka (OSL) and 51.4 ± 8.4 ka (TL). This occupation …

The C entral E uropean watershed passes through the southern F ranconian J ura in B avaria, G ermany. This principal watershed divides the R hine/ M ain catchment and the D anube catchment. In the early Middle Ages, when ships were an important means of transportation, C harlemagne decided to connect these catchments by the construction of a canal known as the F ossa C arolina . In this paper, we present for the first time 14 C data from the F os…

  • C-Dated Charcoal and Sediment Drilling Cores as First Evidence of Holocene Tsunamis at the Southern Spanish Coast

    Open Access•Peter Becker-Heidmann, Klaus Reicherter et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•References: 10

At 2 locations of the southern Spanish coast, we found indications for tsunamis induced by submarine earthquakes. Charcoal, which we sampled in 2 stratified, assumed tsunamigenic sediment (tsunamites) layers at the shore outside the ruins of the Roman city of Baelo Claudia, close to the Strait of Gibraltar (province of Cádiz), and radiocarbon dated, surprisingly turned out to be of identical age, about 465 BP. In the laguna of the Cabo de Gata (p…
