  • Radiocarbon dating and strontium isotope analyses of cremated bones from the Ishibotoke-dani archaeological site of Binman-ji Temple in Taga, Shiga Prefecture, Japan

Open Access•Masayo Minami, Shigeyuki Wakaki et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

Radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating and dietary reconstruction of 28 cremated individuals excavated from the Ishibotoke-dani site in Taga Town, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, was performed to investigate the lifeways of a medieval Buddhist community. Radiocarbon dating indicates that the burial ground was actively used between the 12th and 14th centuries. Spatial and chronological differences are observed among burial areas: Area A dates from the late 12th to 1…

  • Annual rings of algaroba ( Neltuma pallida) tree from northern Peru

Open Access•Marek Krąpiec, Pablo Salazar et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

This study examines Neltuma pallida wood from the Cerro Laguna archaeological site in coastal Peru to establish a floating chronology and absolute dating. Ten cross-sections yielded a 70-year chronology (CLAA1). Alpha-cellulose was extracted from five single growth rings from one sample for radiocarbon dating, then wiggle-matching in OxCal v4.4 using SHCal20. Results place the youngest ring at 1314–1330 CE (95.4% probability), situating the full …

  • Radiocarbon changes in the XI century CE in annual tree rings

Open Access•Andrzej Rakowski, Jacek Pawlyta et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026•References: 39

This paper presents new radiocarbon ( 14 C) measurements from annual tree rings of English oak ( Quercus robur L.) from Kujawy, Poland, spanning 1042–1062 CE. The results confirm an increase in Δ 14 C values between 1053 and 1055 CE, within the Oort Minimum of solar activity, consistent with literature values (Brehm et al. 2021a; Eastoe et al. 2019; Terrasi et al. 2020). The data reveal a sustained increase in Δ 14 C values between 1053 and 1055 …

  • Declining bactericidal effect of benzalkonium chloride for radiocarbon analysis of seawater

    Open Access•Hiroshi A Takahashi, Koh Kakiuchida et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026•References: 27

In freshwater samples, benzalkonium chloride (BAC) effectively prevents radiocarbon ( 14 C) of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from changing owing to its bactericidal effects. The addition of BAC is a promising alternative method to mercury, which is currently the standard method of sterilization. Therefore, it is important to investigate its basic potential in advance for radiocarbon observations in seawater if mercury is prohibited. Since the …

  • Estimation of travertine formation age in northwestern Iran using radiocarbon and stable isotopes

    Open Access•Yoshihiro Asahara, Hadi Amin-Rasouli et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025•References: 19

Travertine is widely distributed in northwestern (NW) Iran and Turkey and serves as a valuable sample for paleoenvironmental reconstructions in semi-arid areas. Previous studies have analyzed the chemical compositions, carbon and oxygen isotopes of the travertines in NW Iran for paleoenvironmental reconstructions, but little dating has been done because travertine 14 C dating faces the problem of identifying the initial 14 C concentration of each…

  • Radiocarbon Concentration in Sub-Annual Tree Rings From Poland Around 660 Bce

Open Access•Andrzej Rakowski, Jacek Pawlyta et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 46

The article presents results of measurements of radiocarbon ( 14 C) concentration in sub-annual dendrochronologically dated tree rings of English oak ( Quercus robur L.) from Grabie village near Kraków (southern Poland). Samples of early wood (EW) and late wood (LW) spanning the years 664–658 BCE. α-cellulose was extracted from each sample and their radiocarbon content was measured at the ATOMKI laboratory in Debrecen, Hungary. The EW and LW data…

  • Evidence of Mass Mortality of the Long-Lived Bivalve Mercenaria Stimpsoni Caused by a Catastrophic Tsunami

Open Access•Kaoru Kubota, Kotaro Shirai et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2021•References: 41

Tsunamis are huge disasters that can significantly damage benthic organisms and the sea-bottom environment in coastal areas. It is of great ecological importance to understand how benthic ecosystems respond to such destructive forces and how individual species are affected. Investigating the effect of such disasters on animals that are seldom caught alive is particularly difficult. Bivalve mollusks are especially suitable for investigating how a …

  • A Simple Co 2 Extraction Method for Radiocarbon Analyses of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon in Water Samples Without a Carrier Gas

    Open Access•Hiroshi A Takahashi, Hiroko Handa et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 39

We developed a simple and cost-effective method for extracting carbon from dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in water samples without a carrier gas. This method only slightly modifies the existing vacuum line for CO 2 purification in radiocarbon research laboratories by connecting several reservoirs and traps. The procedure consists of repeated cycles of CO 2 extraction from water into the headspace of the reaction container, expansion of the extr…

  • Radiocarbon dating of textile Components from Historical silk costumes and other cloth products in the Ryukyu Islands, Japan

Open Access•Toshio Nakamura, Takako Terada et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 11

In our research on traditional clothing and accessories in the Ryukyu Islands of Japan, we have collected cloth fragments from traditional Ryukyuan costumes and other fabric products for radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating. In this study, the cloth samples from historical costumes of noro priestesses (two samples), men and women from high-status families (five samples), and non-costume cloth products (seven samples), belonging to the traditional hereditar…

  • Changes of Chemical Structure and Composition of Charcoal by Radiocarbon Pretreatments

Open Access•Shinji Tomiyama, Masayo Minami et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 29

Charcoal is widely used for radiocarbon dating in archaeological and paleoenvironmental studies. Reliable 14 C dating requires appropriate chemical treatment to remove postdeposition contamination from the charcoal samples. This study assesses two pretreatments: acid-base-acid (ABA) and acid-base-oxidation with stepped combustion (ABOx-SC). In addition to 14 C, the effects of the treatments on the chemical structure and composition of charcoal we…
