Hyperspectral imaging and high-resolution biogenic sedimentary proxies of the mid-elevation Lake Khorlakel (Western Caucasus)
Hyperspectral imaging of lake sediment cores offers a promising analytical method being both high-resolution and non-destructive. In this study, we investigate the potential of an industry-standard hyperspectral (VNIR) camera combined with a custom developed software package to provide indirect data on past changes in sediment accumulation conditions of a mid-elevation lake in the Caucasus Mountains. The software allows for automated core fragmen…
Urbanization Affects Soil Microbiome Profile Distribution in the Russian Arctic Region
Urbanization in the Arctic results in considerable and still poorly known environmental consequences. The effect of urbanization on soil microbiome-an ecosystem component highly sensitive to anthropogenic disturbance-remains overlooked for the Arctic region. The research compared chemical and microbial properties of the natural Podzol soils and urban soils of Murmansk-the largest Arctic city. Particular attention was given to the profile distribu…
Radiocarbon Dating of Medieval Buildings in the Mountainous Part of Ingushetia (Northern Caucasus, Russia)
There are hundreds of preserved medieval buildings in the mountainous part of Ingushetia, including Christian churches, crypts, temples, sanctuaries, battle towers, and living buildings. The chronology of their construction period is still questioned, as there are no radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates published for these buildings and their dating is mainly based on architectural features, a few historical sources, and sometimes on accompanying archaeolog…
Active layer monitoring in Antarctica
Monitoring of active layer thawing depth and active layer thickness (ALT), using mechanical pronging and continuous temperature data logging, has been undertaken under the Circumpolar Active Layer Monitoring – South (CALM-S) program at a range of sites across Antarctica. The objective of this study was to summarize key data from sites in different Antarctic regions from 2006 to 2015 to review the state of the active layer in Antarctica and the ef…
Comparative Dendrochronological and 14 C Dating of 15th Century Russian Icon
A 15th century Russian icon from the Novgorod region was analyzed using both dendrochronological and radiocarbon methods [liquid scintillation counting (LSC) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS)]. This orthodox icon represents the Mother of God (Dexiokratusa). Fine art experts attribute the icon to between the late 14th to the early 15th centuries. The last complete tree ring was dated to AD 1409. There are indications that the trees were cut …
