  • Re-excavation of Discarded Deposits from Švédův stůl Cave (Moravian Karst, Czech Republic) and their Archaeological Potential

Open Access•Petr Škrdla, Jaroslav Bartík et al.•ARTICLE•Študijné zvesti Archeologického…•2025

Many caves worldwide, including those with significant archaeological deposits, have attracted excavators since the end of the 19th c. This has often resulted in caves being partially, or entirely, emptied of sediments. The ‘coarse’ methodology used during earlier excavations has resulted in many finds being missed, which usually resulted in their discard onto nearby spoil heaps along with the sediments. Švédův stůl Cave, in the southern part of …

  • An Emireh point at Ořechov IV–Kabáty Bohunician site (South Moravia, Czech Republic)

    Open Access•Yuri E Demidenko, Petr Škrdla et al.•ARTICLE•Přehled výzkumů•2024

The Emireh point is a triangular point, which distinctive bulb of percussion was eliminated with bifacial thinning applied to proximal part of the artefact. This point is a characteristic tool for the Emiran industries and up to yet reported from Levantine sites only. Recently, an isolated Emireh point was excavated at Bohunician site Ořechov IV in South Moravia, ca 3,000 km as the crow flies from Levantine sites

  • Metabasite Artefacts from the Neolithic Settlement at Brno-Holásky/Tuřany Compared to the Potential Source Rocks within the Želešice Metabasite Body Based on Petrography and Mineralogy

    Open Access•Kristýna Trnová, Petr Gadas et al.•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinaria Archaeologica…•2024•References: 2

The Želešice metabasite body served as a significant area for the exploitation of raw material for the production of polished stone tools in the Neolithic. This study is based on petrographical and mineralogical comparisons of the artefacts from the Želešice-type metabasite collected in the Neolithic settlement (and workshop) at Brno-Holásky/Tuřany with the various rock types occurring around the Želešice metabasite body. The determination of the…

Open Access•Klára Augustinová, Jaroslav Bartík et al.•ARTICLE•Přehled výzkumů•2023

The landscapes of the Mohelno settlement microregion are mostly gently undulating, but also dissected by two deeply incised river valleys – the Oslava River valley in the north and the Jihlava River valley in the south. The western boundary is formed by Zelený kopec (491 m above sea level, while the eastern boundary is marked by Biskoupský kopec (397.3 m above sea level) and Vodanský kopec (397.5 m above sea level). This microregion was settled a…

Open Access•Jaroslav Bartík, Jaromír Kovárník et al.•ARTICLE•Přehled výzkumů•2023

The article informs about the discovery of the remains of a circular structure called a rondel, in this case featuring a double rondel in ‘Padělky’ field near Uherský Ostroh (SE Moravia, Czech Republic) and offers the results of non-destructive methods of research performed there in 2016–2020. The double circular complex was discovered during an analysis of satellite images of the Earth’s surface and subsequently verified by geophysical prospecti…

  • A 15,000-year history of Early Upper Paleolithic hunters moving through the Pustý Žleb valley – Artefacts and chronology of Pod Hradem Cave, Moravian Karst, Czech Republic

Open Access•Ladislav Nejman, Petr Škrdla et al.•ARTICLE•Přehled výzkumů•2022

Archaeological evidence shows that Paleolithic hunters occasionally used the difficult-to-access Pod Hradem Cave for short-term visits. The small collection of artefacts spanning a c. 15,000-year period were made from a range of different raw materials collected from known sources in the surrounding regions up to 120 km away. In this paper, we interpret the sum of the archaeological evidence associated with artefacts from Pod Hradem Cave against …

  • Kramolín hillfort revisited. Archaeological potential of a site flooded for 45 years

Open Access•Jaroslav Bartík, Petr Škrdla et al.•ARTICLE•Přehled výzkumů•2022

The temporary lowering of the water level in Dalešice Reservoir for maintenance in the autumn of 2021 created an opportunity to conduct an archaeological investigation of the Kramolín hillfort – a site permanently flooded since the 1970s. A small group of archaeologists reached the shore of Kramolín island by boat and performed the survey with metal detectors and GPS hand held devices. This survey produced a large collection of lithic artefacts, …

  • Pravěké osídlení v okolí velkomoravského kostela ve Starém Městě – „Špitálkách“

    Open Access•Jaroslav Bartík, Tomáš Chrástek•ARTICLE•Přehled výzkumů•2021

A rescue excavation was carried out in the Staré Město – “Špitálky” location in 1949–1950 by J. Poulík who examined an enclosed sacral area with the remnants of a Great Moravian church and a smaller inhumation cemetery containing more than 40 graves. The church and the immediate surroundings later became part of a national cultural monument. A new evaluation excavation took place there in 2020 in connection with its complex revitalisation and foc…

  • Raw material as fossile directeur? A case study of the use of Stránská skála-type chert

    Open Access•Jaroslav Bartík, Petr Škrdla•ARTICLE•Študijné zvesti Archeologického…•2021

The Stránská skála-type chert is a local Moravian chert of Jurassic age, which is available only within a limited area restricted to the Stránská skála rock outcrop and secondary sources in nearby gravels. As this raw material has been well-studied petrographically, its distribution is easy to trace. Its use and proportions within individual archaeological assemblages in particular vary over time -ranging from the dominant raw material during sever…

Open Access•Jaroslav Bartík, Petr Škrdla et al.•ARTICLE•Přehled výzkumů•2020

A salvage excavation was conducted in harsh conditions to recover stone structure E (KSE). In spite of a very short time window available for digging, an area of 20 m2 was completely excavated and the entire structure (KSE) was carefully documented. Spatial distribution of artifacts closely follows the boundary of the paved area. The raw material spectrum is characterized by prevailing rock crystal, supplemented by quartz, plasma, erratic flint, …
