  • Radiocarbon in the Atmosphere of the Žlkovce Monitoring Station of the Bohunice NPP

    Open Access•P P Povinec, A Šivo et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 27

Radiocarbon variations in the atmosphere have been observed at the Žlkovce monitoring station of the Bohunice nuclear power plant (NPP), situated only 5 km ESE from the NPP. The observed 14 C levels provide unique evidence of a decreasing long-term impact of the Bohunice NPP on the region. Simultaneously, decreasing emissions of fossil fuel carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of the monitoring site have been found. The observed Δ 14 C variations wit…

  • Estimating the Amount of 14 CO 2 in the Atmosphere During the Holocene and Glacial Periods

    Open Access•I Světlík, P P Povinec et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•References: 40

Radiocarbon has been used to define parameters for modeling past, recent, and future CO 2 /carbon amounts in the atmosphere and in other environmental compartments. In the present paper, we estimate the amount of 14 C in the atmosphere by calculating the molar activity of 14 CO 2 (quantity of 14 CO 2 molecules per mol of air). Data on the reconstruction of the past concentration of atmospheric CO 2 from Antarctic ice cores and Δ 14 C activities f…

  • Atmospheric Fossil Fuel CO 2 Measurement Using a Field Unit in a Central European City During the Winter of 2008/09

    Open Access•Miklós Molnár, L Haszpra et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•Cited by: 8•References: 32

A high-precision atmospheric CO 2 monitoring station was developed as a field unit. Within this, an integrating CO 2 sampling system was applied to collect samples for radiocarbon measurements. One sampler was installed in the second largest city of Hungary (Debrecen station) and 2 independent 14 CO 2 sampling lines were installed ∼300 km from Debrecen in a rural site at Hegyhátsál station as independent background references, where high-precisio…

  • Estimation of Long-Term Trends in the Tropospheric 14 CO 2 Activity Concentration

    Open Access•I Světlík, P P Povinec et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 24

Fossil CO 2 emissions have been diluting the global 14 C/C ratio of atmospheric CO 2 (Suess effect). We estimated the 14 CO 2 amount in the atmosphere (and its trend) utilizing the calculated 14 CO 2 activity concentration in the atmosphere ( a acn , reported in mBq m –3 ). This parameter, calculated from Δ 14 CO 2 and the CO 2 mixing ratio (reported in micromoles of CO 2 per mole of air), is connected with the 14 CO 2 quantity in the volume or m…

  • Radiocarbon in the Air of Central Europe

    Open Access•I Světlík, P P Povinec et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•Cited by: 6•References: 45

Regional levels of radiocarbon have been monitored in order to investigate the impact of fossil fuel combustion on the activity of atmospheric 14 CO 2 in central Europe. Data from atmospheric 14 CO 2 monitoring stations in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary for the period 2000–2008 are presented and discussed. The Prague and Bratislava monitoring stations showed a distinct local Suess effect when compared to the Jungfraujoch clean-air moni…

  • Monitoring of Atmospheric Excess 14 C Around Paks Nuclear Power Plant, Hungary

    Open Access•Miklós Molnár, T Bujtás et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•Cited by: 17•References: 24

The activity of radiocarbon in 14 CO 2 and 14 C n H m chemical forms is measured in the vicinity of Paks nuclear power plant (NPP), Hungary, by sampling environmental air. Four differential sampling units at different sites collected samples less than 2 km away from the 100-m-high stacks of Paks NPP, and for reference a sampler was operated at a station ∼30 km away from Paks NPP. We present the results of continuous observations at the 5 stations…
