Life history of the Yangzi Estuary II shipwreck
Shipwrecks provide invaluable insights into human society and trade. Their unique preservation conditions also mean that they can serve as exceptional biobanks, recording traces of organisms carried aboard or arriving post wreck. Yet only limited research has explored the genetic potential of onboard sediments. Here, the authors present environmental and metagenomic analyses of sediments contained in a large amphora from the 150-year-old Yangzi E…
Mid-Holocene environmental change and human response at the Neolithic Wuguishan site in the Ningbo coastal lowland of East China
Coastal wetlands provided a favorable settling site for Neolithic people because of their highly exploitable biomass, but were vulnerable to marine hazards such as coastal flooding. The Chinese Hemudu culture persisted for ~2000 years (7200–5300 cal. year BP) in the Ningbo coastal lowland of East China. This study explores the Hemudu people’s survival strategy using sedimentological and chronological records, and organic and acetic-acid-leachable…
Mid- to late Holocene vegetation change recorded at a Neolithic site in the Yangtze coastal plain, East China
Optical dating of Holocene sediments from the Yangtze River (Changjiang) Delta, China
Mineral magnetic properties of Holocene sediments in the subaqueous Yangtze delta and the implications for human activity and early diagenesis
A mid- to late-Holocene record of vegetation decline and erosion triggered by monsoon weakening and human adaptations in the south-east Indian Peninsula
The mid- to late-Holocene monsoon decline led to aridification of the Indian Peninsula impacting the early agricultural practices in the region. Our analysis of organic carbon, mineral magnetic properties and AMS 14 C dating of a 54.2-m-long sediment core (CY) from the Godavari Delta, India, showed changes in the organic carbon source and sediment provenance, which are linked to the changes in vegetation and soil/rock erosion caused by widespread…
Magnetic properties of tidal flat sediments on the Yangtze coast, China
Measurements of magnetic properties, total organic carbon (TOC) and total sulphur (TS) were performed on recent tidal flat sediments from the Feng-Xian (FX) and Bei-Bu-Gang (BBG) areas of the Yangtze coast and on Holocene tidal flat sediments from core SL67 from the southern Yangtze delta plain, China. The results indicate that greigite has likely formed in the recent upper and middle tidal flat sediments of cores FX and BBG, which are enriched i…
A raised OIS 3 sea level recorded in coastal sediments, southern Changjiang delta plain, China
The distribution of marine-influenced oxygen isotope stage (OIS) 5 to OIS 1 sediments was examined in several late Quaternary boreholes from the southern Changjiang (Yangtze) delta plain, China, using different dating methods including OSL, U-series, AMS 14 C and paleomagnetism. Results demonstrate that coastal and estuarine deposition during OIS 5 and OIS 3 occurred throughout the study area. However, Holocene transgressive sediments were absent…
Exploring Models for Indigenizing Social Work Education in China
The article examines the theories of indigenization and examines the problems facing China's social work education. It shows that the quality of social work education and teaching staff is low. The curriculum emphasizes theory and overlooks practical training. "Using as is," not modifying Western theories, has remained strong. The authors call for the indigenization of social work education
Mid-Holocene coastal hydrology and salinity changes in the east Taihu area of the lower Yangtze wetlands, China
During the mid-Holocene the eastern Taihu area, on China's Yangtze delta plain, was populated by advanced late Neolithic cultures supported by intensive domesticated rice cultivation. This agricultural system collapsed around 4200 cal yr BP, with severe population decline, the end of the Liangzhu culture, and about half a millennium of very low-scale human activity in the area before the re-establishment of agricultural production. Microfossil an…
Assessing C/N and δ 13 C as indicators of Holocene sea level and freshwater discharge changes in the subaqueous Yangtze delta, China
To examine the applicability of C/N and organic carbon stable isotope (δ 13 C) in studies of the Holocene sea level and freshwater discharge in the large river mouth of Yangtze, we observed the distribution of carbon, nitrogen and δ 13 C in a late-Quaternary core (ZK9) collected from the present subaqueous delta. We also collected published data of the two proxies for the suspended particulate matter (SPM) and surficial sediments from the lower Y…
Lithological and Palynological Evidence of late Quaternary Depositional Environments in the Subaqueous Yangtze Delta, China
AMS 14 C ages of post-glacial core sediments from the subaqueous Yangtze delta, along with sedimentary structures and distributions of grain size, pollen spores, and dinoflagellate cysts, show an estuarine depositional system from 13 to 8.4 cal ka BP and a deltaic system from 5.9 cal ka BP to the present. The estuarine system consists of intertidal to subtidal flat, estuarine, and estuarine-front facies, characterized by sand"mud couplets and a h…
Migration patterns of Neolithic settlements on the abandoned Yellow and Yangtze River deltas of China
Archaeological records of the Neolithic settlements on the eastern China coast between 35°N and 30°N, an area covering the abandoned Yellow River and the Yangtze River delta plains, reveal that Neolithic people moved from the Yellow River basin onto the northern coast for fishing, hunting and dry-land agriculture ~ 7000 yr ago. Marine transgression interrupted their activities on the low-lying (2–5 m in elevation) coastal wetlands between 6000 an…
Marine sediment records and relative sea level change during late Pleistocene in the Changjiang delta area and adjacent continental shelf
Holocene climate fluctuations in the Yangtze delta of eastern China and the Neolithic response
Six major pollen-spore assemblage zones can be identified showing alternate warm and cool climate fluctuations on a millennial timescale. The early-Holocene optimum at c. 8000-7800 radiocarbon years BP, is marked by a large proportion of evergreen broad-leaf species in Zone I, suggesting the warmest/hottest climate setting of the Holocene. The mid-Holocene optimum ran from c. 7500 to 5000 BP (Zone III), during which many subtropical warmand wet-t…
