  • Holocene relative sea-level changes in northwest Ireland: An empirical test for glacial isostatic adjustment models

    Open Access•Jason R Kirby, Ed Garrett et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023•References: 5

The late-Quaternary relative sea-level (RSL) history of Ireland is complex, positioned at the margins of the former British-Irish Ice Sheet, and subject to the influence of ice unloading and forebulge collapse. Geophysical models of post-glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) provide estimates of the pattern of RSL change since deglaciation which may be tested and validated with empirical data from proxy records. For the region of northwest Ireland, …

  • The Impact of Community Work: How to Gather Evidence, Mark Doel

Open Access•Karen Mcardle, Sue Briggs et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•2022

My own first foray into community work, as a social worker, was to call a public meeting in the ward where our neighbourhood social work team had newly set up, devolved from central office. The meeting was well-attended, and the first question from the floor was, ‘what are you going to do about all the dog dirt on the pavements?’ It was far from what we had anticipated as an opening topic, but it opened my eyes to the fact that the ‘community’ is…

  • Development of a Training Set of Contemporary Salt-Marsh Foraminifera for Late Holocene Sea- Level Reconstructions in southeastern Australia

    Open Access•Sophie Williams, Ed Garrett et al.•ARTICLE•Open Quaternary•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 89

We collected contemporary foraminiferal training sets from two salt marshes to enable more precise and accurate proxy historical sea-level reconstructions from southeastern Australia. Combined with an existing training set from Tasmania, this new regional set consists of 112 samples and 16 species of foraminifera, of which 13 are agglutinated. Cluster analyses group the regional training set into a high–elevation cluster, dominated by Trochammini…

  • Historical Nankai-Suruga megathrust earthquakes recorded by tsunami and terrestrial mass movement deposits on the Shirasuka coastal lowlands, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan

    Open Access•Ed Garrett, Osamu Fujiwara et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Geological investigations of coastal sediment sequences play a key role in verifying earthquake and tsunami characteristics inferred from historical records. In this paper, we present a multi-proxy investigation of a coastal lowland site facing the Nankai-Suruga megathrust and appraise evidence for tsunamis and earthquake-triggered terrestrial mass movements occurring over the last 800 years. Combining a high-resolution chronology with X-ray comp…
