Carbon-14 in the environment near the Belarusian and the Ignalina nuclear power plants in 2016–2025
Carbon-14 ( 1 4C) is a critical radionuclide for environmental monitoring around nuclear facilities due to its high mobility, atmospheric prevalence, and incorporation into the biosphere via photosynthesis. This study presents the results of a 1 4C monitoring (2016–2025) in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems within the vicinities of two nuclear power plants situated 98 km apart: the newly commissioned Belarusian NPP (BelNPP) and the Ignalina NPP …
Response of freshwater diatoms to Early−Middle Holocene climate changes, SW Lithuania
New insights into the mid-late Holocene environmental history in the E Baltic – multi-proxy data from Aukštumala raised bog, W Lithuania
Effects of Lateglacial and Holocene climate change on southern Baltic environments
The effects of redeposition phenomena on the reconstruction of palaeoenvironment in the southeastern Baltic Sea
The Lateglacial and Early Holocene vegetation dynamics
C and Other Radionuclides in the Environment in the Border Region of Lithuania Before the Start of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant Operation
In this paper, we analyze the background activity of anthropogenic radionuclides ( 14 C, 3 H, 137 Cs, and 239,240 Pu), emphasizing 14 C content, in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in the Lithuanian border region before the commissioning of a new nuclear power plant in Belarus (BelNPP). In terrestrial samples, the 14 C concentration varied insignificantly—from 98.6 ± 0.7 to 102.2 ± 0.8 pMC, which is close to the 14 C level in atmospheric CO 2 .…
Holocene vegetation and hydroclimatic dynamics in SE Lithuania – Implications from a multi-proxy study of the Čepkeliai bog
Radiocarbon and Other Environmental Isotopes in the Groundwater of the Sites for a Planned New Nuclear Power Plant in Lithuania
The assessment of construction sites for the new Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant (Visaginas NPP), including groundwater characterization, took place over the last few years. For a better understanding of the groundwater system, studies on radiocarbon; tritium; stable isotopes of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon; and helium content were carried out at the location of the new NPP, at the Western and Eastern sites, as well as in the near-surface repositor…
C in Radioactive Waste for Decommissioning of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant
Radiocarbon is one of the most significant radionuclides affecting the safety margins of near-surface repositories for the disposal of low- and intermediate-level, short-lived radioactive waste, arising from the operation and decommissioning of nuclear power plants (NPPs). One of the goals of the present study was to characterize radioactive waste from Ignalina NPP (Lithuania) (storage tanks TW18B01 and TW11B03) from the spent ion-exchange resins…
New Archaeological, Paleoenvironmental, and 14 C Data from the Šventoji Neolithic Sites, NW Lithuania
Archaeological, geological, and paleoecological investigations supported by radiocarbon dating enabled us to present a reconstruction of chronologically based paleoenvironmental and human activity changes in the Šventoji region, NW Lithuania, during the period 4000–800 cal BC. In addition, we describe the main stages of the Late Glacial and Holocene periods in the area. The Baltic Ice Lake regression was succeeded by a terrestrial period until th…
